The reality TV juggernaut that is The Block returned on Sunday night, and there’s no better time to celebrate The Block with an entire nation wide theme week.
Sounds a bit too mainstream for us to celebrate something as popular as The Block with a theme week?
Of course, which is why instead of us celebrating our favourite season, person or wallpaper, we’re using it to amuse ourselves with some alternative challenges The Block could use.
So here to celebrate National The Block Week is our list of The Block Alternatives. As in alternative building/houses/locations The Block could do for future seasons.
To break from the usual turning some run down slightly used to be famous something or other building and turn it into something only the highest of high end tools and boasting comedians can sort of afford.
It’s same old, same old, with what will no doubt be the usual edited to create tension, and same tantrums over plasterboard, paint and / or grout.
Time to put some reality into the the reality show we say. Make The Block for everyone.
Here are our alternatives for future The Block seasons.
CARAVAN PARK
There is nothing on earth more in need of renovating than most suburban Caravan Parks. So why not give the next generations of Blockheads an entire caravan park to upgrade.
Give them a on site caravan and / or unit a week to transform for three months. See how the Caravan Park folk like the high end finishes and shades of grey in their lives.
HOUSEBOAT
When viewers finally tire of the same old high end apartments, why not offer them up a Houseboat challenge.
Not only is it a much more limited space to work with, an extra challenge would be getting materials to do the work as Producers only allow the Houseboat to be docked for four hours a day.
THE GHAN OR EQUIVALENT TRAIN
People love long distance train travel, why catch a plane in two hours when you can take days. But very rarely would someone describe it comfortable or modern.
This is why The Block should get on the rails and do a multi carriage makeover.
Imagine transforming the nation’s best train journeys into The Block works of art.
Only problem would be that the train should be moving, so supplies will need to be planned well ahead to coincide with the stops.
SPACE CITY
Ever heard of Space City – the Space Themed Shopping Centre in suburban Brisbane in the 70’s-80’s?
You should have, and we would love to see The Block lovingly recreate Space City Shopping Centre somewhere in Australia, but give it that Block touch on the inside to bring it into the 21st century, and beyond.
ROMA STREET TRANSIT CENTRE
Surely we could get a The Block style makeover on one of Brisbane’s ugliest locations. A place in more need of a facelift than a parade of has been actors in Hollywood.
Labour could be cheap too, being not far from the capital of backpackers in Brisbane.
GOLF COURSE
Why does it have to be a house?
Who wouldn’t love to see The Block teams working on an island green Par 3, Dogleg Par 4’s, and monstrous Par 5’s instead of high end apartments again. Oh, and they’ll have to fight over the Clubhouse as well.
What they lack in any golf knowledge they could make up for with their style guide and imagination.
Of course the regular judges would be replaced with Brett Ogle, Superstar caddy Steve Williams, and Todd Carney.
18 Holes of fun waits this new series of The Block.
