A Quick Intrust Super Cup Round 16 Preview

After the biggest rivalry of the rugby league season has seen its second edition for the season, what a great follow up that the Intrust Super Cup Round 16 is the reverse fixture list of the Rivalry round from earlier in the season.

It is a weekend full of the best clashes the Intrust Super Cup has to offer, from local derbies in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Central Queensland, North Queensland, and a Grand final replay between the Hunters and Falcons no less.

There’s even a few games in different locations like Atherton for the big Cairns-Townsville rivalry of the Pride and Blackhawks, and at Suncorp Stadium as Broncos feeder clubs Norths and Souths Logan provide the pre match entertainment for their NRL club.

There’s something for everyone, so get into the quick preview of Intrust Super Cup Round 16.

Intrust Super Cup Round 16 PREVIEW – MATCH BY MATCH IN A FEW WORDS OR SO

SATURDAY 1:10pm – IPSWICH JETS v EASTS TIGERS

The TV cameras will be at North Ipswich Reserve for what should be n entertaining game, Ipswich with their attacking skills, and try scoring machine prop Nat Neale, and the Tigers with their super talented side. Exciting to see Michael Purcell, Marmin Barba and Wes Conlon all in the Jets squad, as well as 2015 Grand Final hero Billy McConnachie. Easts also have an exciting backline headlined by the halves Walters and Croft, and Scott Drinkwater at the back. Plenty of points likely.

SATURDAY 5pm – NORTHS DEVILS v SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES @ Suncorp Stadium

Norths surprised the Magpies, and some of the competition early in the season when they defeated the Magpies, on their way to being early front runners of the 2018 Intrust Cup season. Souths Logan too have been flying high during 2018, but both the Magpies and Devils recent form has slipped away and so has their ladder position. Norths have won just once in their last six games, and Souths Logan have lost their last three. With a number of teams below them finding form, a turnaround in results is needed soon to stay in the hunt for finals football.

SATURDAY 6pm – NORTHERN PRIDE v TOWNSVILLE BLACKHAWKS @ Atherton

The Pride take their big FNQ derby against the Blackhawks to the town of Atherton, which among other things is known as the town which saved the NRL career of Todd Carney once. The former NRL bad boy could possibly have made the return with the Pride for this match if he hadn’t walked out on the club to return to Sydney. The Pride haven’t really missed him, as their recent winning form of wins in a row sees them sitting very nicely in fourth, and their halves Jordan Biondi-Odo and Jake Clifford have certainly done the job. Townsville are in top form too, winning their last three, and took the competition lead last round. A quality match up awaits. The earlier rivalry round clash saw the Pride’s first ever win over Townsville.

SATURDAY 6pm – CENTRAL CAPRAS v MACKAY CUTTERS

This is a battle of the bottom of the ladder with second last playing last in Rockhampton. Both sides have just three wins for the 2018 season so far, but neither side has been terrible, and both have caused the occasional upset or pushed the big teams all the way. With a little more luck, both of these sides could well be challenging for the top six, but as they are both four points adrift of their nearest team, this game will be all about getting off the bottom of the ladder.

SUNDAY 2pm – BURLEIGH BEARS v TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS

It’s been five straight for the Bears over the Seagulls in the Gold Coast derby, however Tweed Heads arrive at Pizzey Park with their best chance of breaking that sequence for a little while. For starters Burleigh have now lost their last two at home after being seemingly impossible to beat at Pizzey Park, and they arrive with a cavalry of NRL talent with the likes of Konrad Hurrell and Kane Elgey. They should have been joined by Bryce Cartwright who was named below, but the former Penrith star was injured in midweek training and won’t play. Doubt too on one of the stars for Burleigh as halfback Jamal Fogarty is nursing an injury picked up the Queesnland Resident’s loss to their NSW counterparts on Origin Sunday.

SUNDAY 2pm – REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS v WYNNUM SEAGULLS

Another installment of the Herald Cup awaits, with Redcliffe favourites to seal the rivalry after winning the first leg at Wynnum earlier in the season. That was at BMD Kougari Oval where Wynnum have had no luck in 2018, and the Seagulls have much better luck on the road this year with four of their five wins coming away. A good omen for them too, as the away side has won the past Herald Cup clashes. They also welcome back halfback and name you know Michael Dobson from injury.

SUNDAY 3pm – PNG HUNTERS v SUNSHINE COAST FALCONS

A rematch of the 2017 Grand Final which was stolen at the death by a sliding Willie Minoga for the Hunters, and the PNG side will be coming into this game with buckets of confidence after a number of them played in the Kumuls win over Fiji last weekend. Nixon Putt and Junior Rau in particular were excellent for the Kumuls They will need to be as the Falcons have won their last three and are sitting just outside of the Top 6 in seventh. Despite sitting 11th, the Hunters can draw level with the Sunshine Coast with a win, and their home form is reasonable against the Falcons, unlike their match ups at Sunshine Coast Stadium. Sandor Earl continues his comeback to the NRL with the Falcons, and will liekly never get it tougher on his comeback trail facing opposition centre Willie Minoga and the Hunters in Port Moresby.
