A Quick Intrust Super Cup Round 5 Preview

After a relaxing Easter weekend, it is time to work off all the Easter chocolate with a big Intrust Super Cup Round 5.

The weekend starts off with the TV clash between two of the bottom three, surprisingly one of those teams is the Townsville Blackhawks as they welcome the winless Tweed Heads Seagulls. It ends with a classic Sunday afternoon clash between regular Top 6 hopefuls Easts and Redcliffe who always offer up great

In between there is plenty of quality on offer, and questions to be answered.

Can the Burleigh Bears maintain their unbeaten start to the year in the NRL curtain raiser in Gladstone? Can the stingiest defense in the competition (Northern Pride) withstand the onslaught of the attacking Jets and maintain their great start to 2018? Can the PNG Hunters rediscover their away form without Stargroth Amean and Willie Minoga? Is a Seagull better than a Magpie?

We’ll know those answers and more on Sunday evening.

Intrust Super Cup Round 5 PREVIEW – MATCH BY MATCH IN 30 WORDS OR SO

SATURDAY 1:10pm – TOWNSVILLE BLACKHAWKS v TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS
VIEW: Channel Nine @ 1pm

A nice battle of the Woolf brothers this weekend in Townsville – Kristian in charge of Townsville and Ben leading Tweed Heads. Not much joy for either brother in 2018 so far. Townsville belted Mackay in Round 1, but haven’t won since. Tweed Heads haven’t won at all, but are not necessarily playing as bad as their W-L record suggests. Not a great record against Townsville though.

Last Year – Townsville 48 Tweed Heads 18  —  Tweed Heads 8 Townsville 50

Townsville Blackhawks

  1. Carlin Anderson 2. Jonathon Reuben 3. Shaun Hudson 4. Ty Carucci 5. Kalifa Faifai-Loa 11. Jake Marketo 7. Jaelen Feeney 8. Francis Molo 9. Krys Freeman 10. Rod Griffin 21. Andrew Davey 22. Sione Lousi 12. Andrew Niemoeller (c) 17. Temone Power 13. Joe Boyce 19. Brent Woolf 16. Ross Bella

Hiale Roycroft 13. Cheyne Whitelaw (c) 18. Sam Saville 14. Jarrod Morfett 15. Maia Sands 16. Jordan Aiono 17. Rex Johnson

SATURDAY 3pm – IPSWICH JETS v NORTHERN PRIDE

The Northern Pride have been one of the surprises of the early rounds of the Intrust Super Cup, and their Premierships odds continue to be slashed accordingly. But before getting too excited, their three wins from the first four rounds have come at home against admittedly strong opposition like Townsville and PNG Hunters, so the Pride need to prove they can do it away from home, they lost their round 1 clash in Brisbane. Ipswich weren’t able to get past the Capras in Rockhampton last weekend, stopping their momentum of wins over Townsville and Easts.

Last Year – Northern Pride 10 Ipswich 24 —  Ipswich 32 Northern Pride 22

Teams

Ipswich Jets

  1. Michael Purcell 14. Denzel Burns 3. Pio Seci 17. Rory Humphreys 5. Wes Conlon 6. Julian Christian 7. Dane Phillips 8. Tyson Lofipo 21. Kierran Moseley 10. Nat Neale (c) 11. Ben White 12. Seb Pandia 13. Ben Shea 4. Sam Caslick 9. Jayden Connors 16. Rowan Winterfield 19. Mitch Carpenter

SATURDAY 5:30pm – NORTHS DEVILS v PNG HUNTERS

Norths suffered their first loss last weekend at the hands of Wynnum, but will fancy their chances against the Hunters after defeating them in Port Moresby last year against a much stronger Hunters side. The Hunters arrive for their first game of the season in Brisbane minus two of their big stars. Fullback Stargroth Amean has played his last game for the PNG side as he has retired to concentrate on furthering his studies. Grand Final hero Willie Minoga is injured. That gives the lively Adex Wera an extended shot at fullback, and Junior Rau to become the newest Hunter.

Last Year – PNG Hunters 18 Norths 32  —  Norths 18 PNG Hunters 40

Teams

Norths Devils

  1. Jack Ahearn 2. Paul Ulberg 3. Gehamat Shibasaki 4. Chevi Ellis 5. Samuel Wright 6. Troy Dargan 7. Todd Murphy 8. Sam Tagataese 9. Michael Sio 10. Oshae Tuiasau 11. Moses Noovao-McGreal 12. Guy Williams 13. John Palavi (c) 14. Calum Gahan 15. Jamayne Taunoa-Brown 16. Carne Doyle-Manga 17. Iain Riccardi

PNG Hunters

  1. Adex Wera 2. Edene Gebbie 3. Junior Rau 4. Butler Morris 5. Brendon Gotuno 6. Ase Boas 7. Charlie Simon 8. Moses Meninga 9 Wartovo Puara 10. Adam Korave 11. Nixon Putt 12. John Andy 13. Rahdly Brawa 14. Watson Boas 15. Baundo Aba 16. Julius Yakopa 17. Muka Peter Kalu 18. Patrick Morea 19. Paul Bobby Jnr 20. Mekenzie Yei

SATURDAY 6pm – MACKAY CUTTERS v SUNSHINE COAST FALCONS

A clash between two of the four bottom sides, surprisingly last year’s beaten Grand Finalists Sunshine Coast is down this low so early in the season. Lachlan Coote is named again at fullback despite the Cowboys looking like they could do with him at the back, who knows whether he will play. The Falcons have their own NRL experience with Ryley Jacks at halfback, but is up against a very capable duo of Hynes and Laybutt for the Cutters. The very experienced Khan Ahwang makes an appearance at another ISC club, named at fullback for the Sunshine Coast.

Last Year –  Mackay 30 Sunshine Coast 26  —  Sunshine Coast 28 Mackay 18

Teams

Mackay Cutters

  1. Lachlan Coote 2. Yamba Bowie 3. Nathan Saumalu 4. Blake Atherton 5. Johnny Faletagoa’i 6. Nicho Hynes 7. Kyle Laybutt 8. Sam Hoare 9. Jayden Hodges 10. Nicholas Brown 11. Mitchell Dunn 12. Bennett Leslie 13. Jardine Bobongie 14. Jack Hickson 15. Thomas Murphy (c) 16. Shane Wright 17. Jordan Grant

Sunshine Coast Falcons

  1. Khan Ahwang 2. Jake Ainsworth 3. Justin Olam 4. Keelyn Tuuta-Edwards 5. Matt Soper-Lawler 6. Kurt Aldridge 7. Ryley Jacks 18. Tui Kamikamica 9. Harry Grant 10. Jacob Hind 11. Dane Hogan (c) 12. Christopher Lewis 13. Jye Ballinger 14. Lachlan Timm 15. Liam McDonald 16. Louis Geraghty 17. Harrison Muller 19. Caleb Daunt 20. Lachlan Roe

SUNDAY 11:45pm – CENTRAL CAPRAS v BURLEIGH BEARS @ Marley Brown Oval, Gladstone

Gladstone gets their first taste of Intrust Super Cup this weekend, as a curtain raiser for the Titans v Sea Eagles NRL clash, makes sense as both of these clubs are Titans affiliated. Burleigh are now the only unbeaten team in the competition, and their form is ominous for the rest of the teams at the moment. Central got the better of the Bears in early 2017, but a repeat upset looks quite unlikely given Burleigh’s form so far this season, despite their excellent win over Ipswich last weekend.

Last Year – Central 12 Burleigh 10  —  Burleigh 28 Central 18

Teams

CQ Capras

  1. Zeik Foster 2. Junior Kirisome 3. Connor Broadhurst 4. Nathan Bassani 5. Chanel Seigafo 6. Blake Goodman 7. Jack Madden (c) 8. Bill Cullen 9. Billy Gilbert 10. Jerry Key 11. Dave Cowhan 12. Dave Taylor 13. Jamie Hill 14. Aaron Teroi 15. Brad Lupi 16. Oliver Percy 17. Luke George 18. Tyson White 19. Peter Rogers 20. Aaron Flanagan

Burleigh Bears

  1. Kurtis Rowe 2. Tyrone Roberts-Davis 3. Sami Sauiluma 4. Jamie Dowling 5. Brenko Lee 6. Dallas Wells 7. Jamal Fogarty 8. Luke Page (c) 9. Pat Politoni 10. Matt White 11. Hayden Schwass 12. Blake Leary 13. Sam Coster 14. Jai Whitbread 15. Dylan Kelly 16. Josh Ailaomai 17. Joe Greenwood

SUNDAY 3pm – EASTS TIGERS v REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS

Two teams that regularly compete for the Top 6 places meet on Sunday, and as ever it should be a clash worth making the effort to get to Suzuki Stadium in the traditional Sunday afternoon slot. Both teams on a 2-2 record, and both recorded very good wins last start. The Tigers 38-8 win over the Falcons was particularly impressive in the TV game. More of the same from the Tigers on Sunday will see it being very hard for Redcliffe to take the two points.

Last Year – Easts 18 Redcliffe 10  —  Redcliffe 22 Easts 12

Teams

Easts Tigers

  1. Maeli Seve 2. Linc Port 3. Kea Pere 4. Conor Carey 5. Jarrod McInally 6. James Salter 7. Brayden Torpy 8. Ash Little 9. Chris Ostwald 10. Patrick Kaufusi 11. Jake Foster (c) 12. Brett Greinke 13. Jack Svendsen 14. Jarred Tuite 15. Anton Iaria 16. Jack Anderson 17. Harley Aiono

Redcliffe Dolphins

  1. Tony Tumusa 2. Obed Karwhin 3. Jeremy Hawkins 4. Moses Pangai 5. Curtis Johnston 6. Joshua Fauid 7. Cameron Cullen (c) 8. James Taylor 9. Sheldon Pitama 10. Sam Anderson 11. Toby Rudolf 12. Kotoni Staggs 13. Samson Graham 16. Tom Geraghty 15. Nathan Watts 17. Hugh Pratt 25. Trai Fuller

SUNDAY 3pm – SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES v WYNNUM SEAGULLS

An all Brisbane, all Broncos feeder club, all Bird clash on a Sunday afternoon. There isn’t much between the two sides at the moment, they sit beside each on the ladder, each has two wins, and their for and against is almost identical after the first four rounds. So on paper there looks nothing between them. The one advantage for either side is the two proven try scorers on either wing for Wynnum – Delouise Hoeter and Daniel Ogden.

Last Year – Magpies 4 Wynnum 17  —  Wynnum 16 Magpies 22

Souths Logan Magpies

  1. Corey Allan 2. Cameron Booth 3. Marion Seve 4. Scott Doyle 5. Lenny Magey 6. Guy Hamilton 7. Sam Scarlett 8. George Fai 9. Jordan Scott 10. Sam Lavea 11. Simi Fatafehi 12. Brendon Gibb 13. Patrick Mago 14. Travis Waddell 16. Uiti Baker 17. Thomas Flegler 15. Phil Dennis (c)

Wynnum Manly Seagulls

  1. Patrick Templeman 2. Delouise Hoeter 3. Jeriah Goodrich 4. Edward Burns 5. Daniel Ogden 6. Aaron Booth 7. Michael Dobson 8. Adam Tuimavave-Gerrard 9. Mitch Cronin 10. Max Elliott 11. Patrick Carrigan 12. Til Vea 13. Mitch Frei (c) 14. Jayden Berrell 15. Junior Pita 16. Salesi Funaki 17. Payne Haas 18. Alex Barr

Patrick Heisenberghttps://www.thegurgler.com
Heisenberg was born in the wealthy township of Ipswich, Queensland. From this richly cultural locality he flourished as a cynical, sneering critic of most ventures, policies and regimens that were forced upon him. Not content with simply pointing out ‘the alarming wrongs’ he found with things he deemed crucial to the evolution of mankind (namely our newfound and nation-wide deficiency in cricket, a lack of identity regarding what constituted ‘Australian’ food and the appalling narcissism that has crippled society in a post-Facebook ™ world) he began jotting down lists of things he hated and things he felt could be done better. Over time he found that he rather enjoyed immersing himself within this sea of negativity, to the point where he caught the eye of global cynic Theydon Bois after Heisenberg posted a particularly futile and rambling rant to their work-team’s inbox. Kindred spirits, they are now compiling endless amounts of lists and drivel as to what plagues society, mankind, the economy and cricketing sides, all without a skerrick of irony, but with an undeniable veneer of self-righteousness and a complete lack of willingness to opine any resolutions to the problems they identify. Heisenberg lives by the self-built motto ‘I’d rather be right than happy’, an ideology he sticks to religiously to this very day.
