Mundine v Green 2 – Some Reasons to Care… Or Not

Very soon the Australian sporting community will be talking about Mundine v Green 2. A rematch that sort of had to happen.

And happen it will on February 3, at the reasonably unlikely venue of the Adelaide Oval.

It is a rematch that has been a long time coming. Ever since Mundine took out the first bout in May 2006, most people have expected and a select few outside the respective camps and TV broadcasters have demanded a rematch.

Was it because the first fight was so great that a repeat was needed, or simply that Mundine won and plenty wanted revenge on behalf of Danny Green because Mundine is perceived as highly unlikeable?

Probably both, Mundine isn’t very well liked outside of his closer friends, but is still not as bad as say a Tennis Jerk. So we’re saying he’s better than a Kyrgios, Tomic, or the entire Channel Nein Cricket Commentary team, but worse than a minor jerk like John Steffensen, Grant Hackett or Frank Walker from National Tiles. Although there’s not much in it with that last one.

The question remains though, will this all be ridiculous over the top hype , or a genuine Premium event, that will come with a premium price on Foxtel or at your local.

We believe that it will be well worth the effort and point out a few of the reasons why you should care about Mundine v Green 2.

THE RETURN OF THE BIG NAME BIG TIME BOUT

It wasn’t long ago that there always seemed to be a big time boxing bout coming up. Full of Tyson biting people and wanting to eat children, or Oscar de la Hoya, Kostya Tszyu, Jeff Fenech loving various people (before loving watches more) and Peter McNeeley who famously said he would wrap Tyson in a “cocoon of horror” before being disqualified after 1 minute and 29 seconds.

One could argue a long line of hulking Russians and Ukrainian, and Brits made Boxing less interesting for the Australian sporting public. So Mundine v Green 2 is well timed, or at least something to nibble on before the big Jeff Horn v Manny Pacquiao bout comes to town, where they are fighting for a proper title.

But the title at the end of Mundine v Green 2 means a lot to them. Green won’t want to be beaten by Mundine twice, and Mundine will want to provide to ultimate Shut the F*** up to the rest of Australia.

THERE’S NOTHING BETTER THAN TWO FIGHTERS SLIGHTLY PAST THEIR PRIME SHAPING UP

There’s nothing funnier than two older gents shaping up in the carpark of a licensed venues. It sometimes draws a crowd bigger than the audience of the house band playing Rockin’ Robin for the second time. The fight in Adelaide has the same feel.

Isn’t that the reason people frequent various suburban nightclubs like the Rum Jungle and Bungalow Beach Club after midnight?

People don’t want to see two fit young bucks going at it, they want names they know and trust. Ones they think they can probably beat even if they can’t.

So Mundine v Green 2 provides all that and more.

WAITING FOR THE IRONY IF DANNY GREEN WINS BY ONE PUNCH

Don’t get us wrong, Danny Green’s work for stopping the gutless One Punch incidents out and about in the Nightlife is highly regarded and respected. But it would be slightly ironic and amusing if Green could beat Mundine with just a solitary punch.

STOP THE ARGUMENTS FROM THE FIRST FIGHT

It’s been a while since the first fight, and the arguments about who the winners and real winners of the fight are tiresome. In fact most publicity from Mundine is tiresome.

So hopefully the Mundine v Green 2 bout will end with a decisive victory one way or the other and we will never see a number 3 bout again.

IT COULD BE THE LAST FIGHT FOR EITHER

Given the age and career of both fighters, you could easily see the losers pulling up stumps.

So too, the winner, may not feel the need to kick on after defeating their arch enemy.

That’s a good thing.

HOPEFULLY THERE IS ONE OF THOSE FEISTY WEIGH INS

There’s nothing better or funnier that a bust up at the weigh in.

Whilst it would be funnier if it were between the two pugilists, there will plenty of hangers on from both camps, and hopefully some up for a little entertainment for the fans before the match.

WHAT OTHER SPORT IS THERE TO WATCH ON A FRIDAY NIGHT

With the footy seasons still a month away, the big gap in Friday night viewing remains.

Sure you could fill it with A League, NBL, or muted coverage of the Australian Cricket Team, but a big time boxing bout is much better.

WHAT ABOUT THE UNDERCARDS?

Well, a big bout needs good undercards. But since there are stuff all details on the undercards, which is not a good sign for quality, we decided to come up with 5 of our own suggestions.

Sure they are highly unlikely and stupid, but can’t you just imagine one of the two bouts.
