Formula 1 is wasting no time at all with a double header to kick off the season, the weekend after the spills and thrills of the opening race in Melbourne. Talking of Spills, and to a lesser degree Thrills, our 2025 Chinese F1 Grand Prix Preview is trying its best to make this weekend sound like it’s going to be half as good as last weekend.
The Gurgler’s 2025 Chinese F1 Grand Prix Preview brings some thoughts on the track and race itself, a more than a few barely interesting stats.
Essentially a quick summary of what a casual F1 fan needs in the shortest possible time for your convenience.

2025 Chinese F1 Grand Prix Preview – Race Potential Rating

The Gurgler does like to use some obscure drivers in our Race previews and report, so who better to use than Teo Fabi to determine a race rating system.
So before each race we give a rating out of ten for four key category that are loosely based on each letter of Teo Fabi’s surname. Don’t know who Teo Fabi is, you should.
FAST? 5 / 10 – It’s got a couple of long straights, and a few fast-ish corners, but it is such a modern track that it doesn’t look or feel fast as a fan.
ACTION? 5 / 10 – The track does have some part that make it easy to overtake, or in the case of Lance Stroll, to run up the back of another car because you weren’t watching where you going. A few drivers have put in some really good races from the back of the grid, but the brain doesn’t recall too many classics. The gap between races in 2019 and 2024 has affected the memory.
BIG HISTORY? – 3 / 10 – The Chinese Grand Prix has been around since 2004 and has been a regular from 2004, but no one seemed to miss the Chinese Grand period when it disappeared so……
INCLEMENT WEATHER? – 3 /10 The Weather Channel say 6% chance of rain on the Sunday and 11% chance for the Saturday. At best, P1 could be rain affected, which means no one will run, which makes it worse to have rain.
RACE POTENTIAL RATING 40% – A modern circuit with a modern F1 history.
2025 Chinese F1 Grand Prix Preview – Stats Summary
Want to know if your favourite driver for this weekend is a master of the track or the track is a master of them? Here then are some barely interesting facts and stats.
- Pole has won this race 10 of 17 times, with a further four podiums taken from pole. One DNF among two other point scoring finishes.
- Sixth is the lowest grid slot for a win in Shanghai, and it’s been done twice.
- 18th is the lowest grid slot for a podium.
- Just the one podium for Max Verstappen in China. It was a win.
- Yuki Tsunoda and Lance Stroll are the only current drivers to have raced in Shanghai and not scored a point.
- Look for more Hulkenberg gold. He has qualified in the top ten for the last four Chinese Grands Prix in various cars, none of them great.

99 = a DNF. Grid position 20 is overstated as that was also used for cars starting in pitlane. Results from 2016.
