The Park Cricketer – The Underwhelming Boys’ Weekend

A cricket team’s weekend away has proven underwhelming.

After winning the premiership back in March, the Morningside Magpies C Grade team decided to celebrate with a ‘boys’ weekend’ at Moreton Bay.

“Our skipper has a holiday house up in Moreton, so we all kicked in some money for a weekend away,” said Peter – the Magpies’ C Grade leg spinner.

While Peter and the boys were anticipating a big weekend full of drinking and debauchery, reality hit quickly.

“The house was in the middle of nowhere and the only entertainment was a table tennis court and a TV room with a bookcase full of DVDs.”

Arriving on Saturday afternoon, the boys kept to themselves on Saturday night.

“Some of the boys were a bit dusty after a big Friday night and didn’t feel like going out. Even if we wanted to go out, the nearest pub was yonks away! We had a BBQ dinner, played a bit of table tennis, and then sat around and talked about the cricket season over a few beers. A few of the younger boys got bored and went to the TV room to watch movies. I ended up going to bed before midnight and watching footy highlights on my phone.”

But the Sunday was slightly better.

“We had a nice fry up and then went to the nearest beach, browsed around the Sunday markets, and had ice cream. After that we went back to pack up and go home. Some of the boys were talking up how amazing this weekend would be, but it was kinda boring – everyone behaved themselves and nobody got blind drunk. I would have preferred if we’d stayed home and gone to a pub instead. Or at least go away on a long weekend so we’d have more time to do stuff.”

Though it seems Peter wasn’t alone in his feedback, with a lot of group chat discussion about how the weekend was pleasant but not very exciting.
