2024 Round 1 Newcastle v Canberra – CANBERRA 28 d NEWCASTLE 12
Canberra has pulled off an upset win at Newcastle. While most pundits wrote off the Milk as wooden spooner contenders (or bottom four at best), the Raiders showed they’ll at least be competitive in 2024.
Leading 8-6 at half-time, Canberra went on with it, with second half tries to Danny Levi, Xavier Savage, Jordan Rapana, and Hudson Young sealing Canberra’s first 13+ win since September 4, 2022.
Even a late try to Jackson Hastings – cutting the margin to 10 points – didn’t worry Canberra as they answered back on full-time through Young.
Trailing 2-0 after 23 minutes, Newcastle could have hit the front when Tyson Gamble scored off a Kalyn Ponga break, but the try was disallowed when Tyson Frizell was ruled to have obstructed Danny Levi.
There was more drama when Young was sin-binned after late contact on Ponga in the lead up to the try.
