EVERYDAY NEWS – The ‘Hey Hey’ Revival

A Brisbane man is keeping an once-cherished Saturday night tradition alive.

A fan of legendary Australian variety show Hey Hey It’s Saturday, he’s using the wonders of modern technology to keep Hey Hey on Saturday nights.

“I’m a premium member of the Hey Hey.TV website, so every Saturday night, at 6:30pm, I whack on an old episode of Hey Hey. The only exception is when the mighty Bronx play on Saturday nights, but Hey Hey goes on straight after,” said John. “I’m up to the late-80s. And once I reach 1999, I’ll watch the reunion specials and the 2010 revival.”

Like most Australians, John grew up watching Hey Hey as a child and into adulthood.

“As a young fella, I loved Ossie, Dickie, Plucka, and John Blackman’s silly voices. When I  got older, I enjoyed the comedians, the music, and how many adult jokes they got away with. Even though I’d go out on a Saturday night in my teens and twenties, I always watched Hey Hey first. And I ate up the Monday night Red Faces specials and the revival season – even though it was weird watching it on Wednesday night. I was sad after the show didn’t return in 2011, but I moved on.”

John rediscovered his love for Hey Hey after watching the Hey Hey It’s 50 Years special on Channel 7 in 2021.

“I watched out of nostalgia and I remembered how funny it was. After some YouTube deep dives, I signed up to the Hey Hey website and – because there’s nothing on TV except the footy – started watching on Saturday nights from the beginning.”

Everyday News is a brand new general news/parody section of The Gurgler, and definitely not a lame rip-off of ‘The Betoota Advocate’. We swear.
