A Brisbane producer is set to revolutionise reality TV.
“It’s called Reality Soap, and it’s a reality TV version of a soap opera,” said the producer Peter. “I’ve worked on a lot of worldwide reality franchises and I’m sick of them pretending to have some higher concept – like finding love or winning a talent contest – when it’s really about mining as much drama, fighting, and conflict as possible. Stuff perfect for overdramatic promos.”
In Reality Soap, 12 contestants are stuck in a house for two months, with their activities based on plotlines from classic soap operas from around the world.
“We’re going to pick the top six plotlines each week and use our various social media platforms so the punters can vote on their top three. The show airs Sunday to Thursday, so we’ll mix and match these plots so there’s plenty of variety,” said Peter.
“No plotline is off-limits. In fact, the more ridiculous and overdramatic the better. The goal is to humiliate the contestants. Most of them want to become breakfast radio stars or some kind of influencer through these shows, so let’s see how good they are at acting.”
Unlike most reality shows, there will be no weekly eliminations. Instead, the 12 contestants will be divided into three teams to perform the plots (which are randomly assigned), with the audience voting on which team had the most entertaining plots: three points for first, two for second, and one for third. The top team at the end wins $20,000 between them.
“Whichever plot gets the most votes wins. There could be a bit of strategy here, especially during the final weeks. We could potentially get double the drama, with the inter-team shenanigans matching the confected soap opera drama.”
Reality Soap will be broadcast on Channel 10 in September and will run until the end of the 2023 ratings season.
