Group H South Korea v Ghana Match Review
Another fanatic game on Monday night saw Ghana lose a two goal lead and still find a winner as South Korea tried their best to equalise at the end.
Minutes that Mattered
Welcome to the briefest of match summaries, like a minute by minute you find on professional websites except one that has only the minutes that matter. All wheat, no chaff.
And if the below isn’t enough, for those in Australia you can catch up via the SBS World Cup on Demand.
4’ Min Korea go close first with a dangerous cross cleared quickly the Ghana defence.
6’ Min Free Kick to Korea after a very ordinary tackle, which misses at first, but then leads to a corner for Korea. And another corner, and then the penalty area scramble commenced, with Korea unable to score anything other than a new corner. Eventually the play fizzes out.
11’ Min Korea are still attacking, this time with another corner. And another dud result. We thinks they need to do check on the number of Korean players on the field such is the dominance
23’ Min GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL FOR GHANA
Against the run of play, Ghana take the lead. A free kick from Jordan Ayew is curled into the penalty area, and while the header missed the mark, the rebound fell to Mohammed Salisu who slots the ball into the net from close range. VAR Threatens to find something technical to ruin the party, but the goal is given.
GHANA 1 SOUTH KOREA 0
33’ Min GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL FOR GHANA
The first goal had given Ghana and extra spring in their step and killed a little bit of the enthusiasm of Korea and Ghana take advantage by doubling their lead. The goal is set up by a sensational cross from Jordan Ayew from wide out, and Mohammed Kudus was in the right place at the right time with a perfect glancing header to score.
GHANA 2 SOUTH KOREA 0
37’ Min Korea have a good chance with Son in space, but before he can shoot he is surrounded by five Ghana defenders. The ball is passed on to a team mate who smashes it toward goal and is tipped over the bar by the Ghana keeper. It was ruled offside anyway, so the previous words are now obsolete.
HALF TIME – GHANA 2 SOUTH KOREA 0
50’ Min First decent chance of the second half goes to Ghana and Tariq Lamptey, showing Ghana aren’t just settling for 2-0.
52’ Min First decent chance for South Korea and it is a beauty and maybe deserving of a goal. Cho Gue-sung meets a cross with a powerful header, but the Ghana keeper is up to the job.
58’ Min GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL FOR SOUTH KOREA
Are we seeing a second two goal deficit overcome in consecutive games? Korea score through Cho Gue-sung whose header was perfectly timed after a beautiful cross from Hwang Hee-chan as a result of Ghana playing around with the ball in their own half.
GHANA 2 SOUTH KOREA 1
60’ Min GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL FOR SOUTH KOREA
Yes comeback completed as South Korea score two in two minutes. It is Cho Gue-sung who scores a second in quick time off his head, with the difference being the cross coming from Kim Jin-su this time.
GHANA 2 SOUTH KOREA 2
68’ Min GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL FOR GHANA
Ghana are back on top with a third goal. Ghana attack down the left and Gideon Mensah provides a great cross into the box, then there was either an attempt to shoot that went wrong as a giant air swing or a clever dummy from Iñaki Williams, then the ball continues to Mohammed Kudus who scores his second goal of the day.
GHANA 3 SOUTH KOREA 2
75’ Min Free kick for Korea just outside the box and they go very close and a sharp save from the keeper is required to keep Ghana in front. A minute later Korea go close again as a shot heads towards goal and a desperate clearance from the Ghana defence keeps the lead. For now.
90’ Min Just a lazy ten minutes of added time to come, which hurts a lot for these tired players, and for the poor people at home watching this into 1am and beyond. South Korea are throwing everything in attack at Ghana who reply by throwing everything into their defence. We expect lots more throwing of various things for the last ten minutes or so.
90’ +6 Korea go so close to equalising, first with Cho Gue-sung and the second with a ball going across the face of the goal but no owner from Korea for the tap in goal.
Ghana hang on to win 3-2, and further drama as the Korean coach is red carded after the match ends.

Group H South Korea v Ghana Match Preview
Why should you care?
Well the second half of Portugal v Ghana is enough for us to want to tune in. Ghana pushed Portugal all the way in what was probably the game of the round.
If we’re honest though, South Korea aren’t the most inspiring of teams to follow, and of course their first up 0-0 means it could be more of the same here.
At least it is an important game for both in the battle for best of the rest in Group H, presuming Portugal keep winning.
Who should you care about?
André Ayew got one of Ghana’s goals v Portugal, and was then strangely replaced straight away, which led to two quickfire goals from Portugal to take the game away. Ayew then lew up deluxe on the sideline, so his response will be interesting.
Son Heung-min is always a player to watch, but is currently wearing his mask for protection after an injury and it seems to have slowed him a touch. South Korea need him at 100%, so he will be the player to watch on behalf of South Korea.
