A park cricketer has tried hard to justify his poor fielding.
Adam (20) joined the Belconnen Bulls this summer and impressed his sixth grade teammates with his enthusiasm and likeability: unfortunately, it was clear his fielding wasn’t up to snuff.
Adam quickly became a fine leg specialist, but is seeing the bright side.
”Running from fine leg to fine leg all day means I’m the fittest I’ve ever been. And I don’t see the ball a lot, so I have plenty of time to enjoy the atmosphere, especially on a nice, sunny day.”
Though Adam isn’t without hope, as his left arm wrist spinners are handy but erratic, taking six wickets so far, including a best of 2/32.
”The kid bowls some rubbish, but he gives it a good old rip and has a beautiful wrong ‘un – when he lands it!” said the Bulls sixths captain Trevor. “There’s plenty to work with.”
Wanting to help him improve his fielding, Trevor bought Adam a portable catching net and a canister of tennis balls.
”I told him to do at least 200 catches every day. Hopefully it helps. If not, then he can join my winter indoor cricket team; the ball ping pongs around everywhere, so you have to be ready for anything. A good indoor stint might even help his batting too. Maybe.”
