Welcome to our Fantasy Premier League FPL GW3 Captain Preview + Stats Preview for another week of exciting fantasy football.
Every gameweek we take a truckload of stats and compile them into our Captain’s table and then have a score out of 100 who we think should be captain.
Along with the Captain’s Table is a load of key stats for general FPL knowledge, like who is taking the most shots, chances created, FPL Bonus Points and more.
FPL GW3 Captain Preview – Captain’s Table
Here are the FPL Captain Picks GW3 results. A full explanation and full list of the stats and calculations are provided at the end.
Stats are based up to the previous GW except for scoring records v opposition. Where there is no opposition history we have all time Premier League season’s stats (in yellow text).
FPL Captain Preview GW3 Thoughts
HELLO – Mo Salah / Gabriel Jesus
After an impressive return of 19 points last GW against Leicester, Jesus is looking rise again this weekend against the team that conceded four goals to Man City. As you can see from our Stats table below, Jesus has key stats that outrank even Mo Salah, especially touches inside the penalty box.
Despite Liverpool’s lack of wins to start the season, Mo Salah is still looking good for FPL. He features strongly in our Key Stats table below, even though he sits sixth in our Captain’s Table. It probably has a lot to do with his record v Man Utd and the fact that Man Utd aren’t playing very well. They did concede four in a half against Brentford lst weekend.
So which one do you take? Obviously the one you have. But if you have both can you trust Jesus to score big again. Mo Salah has a great scoring record against Man Utd who are not going well. And it is Mo Salah, a proven captain performer.
For the record a decision has to be made eventually, so we’re siding with Mo.
CALL ME MAYBE – Anyone from Manchester City
In seasons gone past it was which Man City player would you captain against Newcastle not if you would. But Newcastle are fast becoming a much better side, and a shitload of cash from Saudi Arabia help. But so has Eddie Howe. Newcastle are the only other side than Man City not to concede this season, and in fact going back to January last season, Newcastle are conceding goals at less than one a game. Just.
So while players like Haaland, de Bruyne, Cancelo in our Captain’s table are always great choices, we assign a maybe as captain because it may not be the pants down thrashing goal fest it has been in previous years. Newcastle are no Bournemouth, which is ironic given how long Eddie Howe spent there.
GOODBYE – Manchester United Players
Probably obvious but hard to consider many from Man Utd in your FPL side let alone captain. Their bad opening to the season is not helped by a visit from Liverpool, who gave them a very hard time last season.

FPL GW3 Captain Preview – Quick Key Stats
A new section of our weekly preview as we have a look at the Heroes and Villains of the recent week of Fantasy Premier League and the season so far.
GW2 was a good one for the Creationists as Jesus was the stand out and the biggest FPL villain probably was Darwin Nunez.
HERO – Gabriel Jesus was a real polariser heading into the new FPL season, and a GW1 blank wouldn’t have helped. But for those who remained loyal they were rewarded with a big haul in GW2. And with Bournemouth awaiting this week, that could easily double down. Jesus has seven shots and three on target, and had 15 touches insdie the penalty area – five more than next best Salah or Havertz.
VILLAIN – Darwin Nunez had quite the impact in GW1, so would have dragged a lot of managers into including him for GW2, but his no goals and send off for a “head butt” makes him qyite the villain this week. Not only was the send off annoying for those who own, it will throw doubt whether he will start on his return. Don’t overlook that he looked ok v Crystal Palace and still managed five shots.
HERO – Kevin de Bruyne has always been a Superman and his late 21/22 season form continues. He was third for touches in the final for GW2, Second best for Chances Created (5) behind Salah’s eight. A goal and an assist. Four shots and two on target.
VILLAIN – Manchester United look a rabble and hard to believe they have gone backwards from last season. Thinking back to the end of the 20/21 season when it was hard to decide which three Man Utd players to have in your side, different times. They may well improve, but don’t think that will happen until Ronaldo is moved on. But note that Manchester United are third for Chances Created this season, with 26 which is only two behind Man City and Liverpool. And third for shots.
FPL GW3 Preview – Other Stats
2022-23 SEASON STATS SO FAR
Before one ventures into the new gameweek, how about a review of who is doing the best at the moment across a wide range of key stats.
We’ve hand picked the best of them from this season so far and last weekend’s action.
- Darwin Nunez is only one shot behind Bournemouth’s total for Shots in his two partial games so far this season (9 v 10)
- Only two teams ended GW2 with two clean sheets from their first two games. Man City and Newcastle – who play each other this weekend.
- Cheap 4.0 defender Neco Williams looks a good one to have from Nottingham Forest, he’s had the same same shots/shots on target stats as Alan Saint-Maximin this season. He caught the eye watching the match v West Ham.
- Livewire Brentford strike Ivan Toney has created twice more chances this season so far than had shots on goal (6 v 3). His team mate Josh da Silva is the man for efficiency with two shots, both on target for two goals. That’s impact for 4.6M.
