With July turning into August, club cricketers around the country are preparing for pre-season training after a long and cold winter.
Everyday News Staff Writers spoke to Garry Kelly (a 33-year-old medium pacer for the Belconnen Blues fifth XI) about his pre-season preparation.
”The club’s social media guys put up a Facebook message that training was starting next weekend, so I pulled the old kit bag from the shed, and it was pretty nasty. There were three rotted banana peels from our last game in March, a half-eaten bag of chips, and my pads felt a bit sticky for some reason.”
After cleaning out his kit and let it air out on the clothesline, Garry messaged some team-mates to have a hit and get back into cricket mode.
“Mate, I’ve spent the last five months watching my mighty Raiders, drinking a lot of beer, and doing family stuff, so I was pretty rusty. Though I started to hit a decent line and length after a couple hours. I batted ok too. The run will do me good. I probably should have joined our winter indoor team to keep trim, but I had a shocking season last summer and wanted to forget about cricket for a bit.”
Garry is entering his fifth season with the Blues Fifth XI, and is keeping his goals fairly realistic.
”I only got 10 poles last year, so I want to beat that. And I want to make less ducks too. And take a few more catches. And avoid the dreaded fine-leg-to-fine-leg duty. Might have to bribe skip with a few cartons before round one for that to happen. Probably should have gone to the AGM too.”
