Two rounds in and some rugby league fans are already staring down the barrel of another season of mediocrity, while others are smugly grinning about their lead of the family tipping competition. Somewhere in between is our weekly one stop shop for the weekend of rugby league ahead is here – the 2022 NRL Round 3 Predictions Stats Preview + Alternative Tips.

We also offer up some alternative tips. These alternative tips are often based on a rugby league, and sometimes something completely absurd, and are aimed at those NRL tipsters who just can’t be bothered.

This week’s alternative tips is based on the H2H record of each club since 1998 in the contest that they will play this weekend. This is in honour of Souths’ continuing their losing streak in Melbourne with no wins since 1998.

With that stat hanging in the breeze, why not let that stat ride and use them for all the alternative tips for Round Three.

It’s easy, whichever team has the overall best winning % since 1998 gets the tip for this weekend.

2022 NRL Round 3 Barely Interesting Stats

MATCH BY MATCH BARELY INTERESTING STATS

  • Sharks have won the last three Shire clashes and five of the last six.
  • Dragons have won the only Thursday fixture between these teams.
  • Sharks have won five of their last six clashes v Sydney sides, including two of the top four from 2021.
  • Dragons have lost nine straight v fellow Sydney clubs including the last two Sydney clashes 16-20. Which was also the exact score from their only Thursday night clash v Sharks, except the Dragons won.
  • Warriors are on a three game winning streak v Wests Tigers. And four in a row on a Friday. The Tigers last win on a Friday v Warriors was in 2012.
  • Warriors have won four of eight clashes on a Friday v Sydney clubs going back to 2020. Three of those four wins have come against the Tigers.
  • Souths have won the past three games v Roosters and scored 140 points in total across those three games.
  • Souths have won nine of their last ten Friday night home games.
  • The last two games between these sides on a Friday has seen the exact same score – 26-16.
  • Penrith’s record at Bathurst is four wins – three losses.
  • The last six games between Newcastle and Penrith have alternated winners. Which means Newcastle are due to win if the trend continues.
  • Parramatta have won the last two v Melbourne and three of their last four.
  • Parramatta have been the most successful side against Melbourne since 2015.
  • Parramatta have lost four of their past five away trips on a Saturday with the only win coming against the Storm. Going back 10 seasons, the Eels have won just 8/40 away games on a Saturday.
  • Canberra are playing the Gold Coast on Saturday afternoon.
  • The circumference of drawing a line around all the Sydney based clubs, including Newcastle and Illawarra is still less than half of the distance between Brisbane and Townsville.
  • Brisbane last beat the Cowboys on a Sunday in 2005. There have only been two games in between with the last Sunday fixture in 2015. Sunday Channel Nein crew will have to study the names of the Cowboys players.
  • Broncos have lost four of their last five matches v Qld opposition on a Sunday.
  • Cowboys have lost six of their last seven on the road on a Sunday.
  • North Qld have played the fewest Sunday games in the NRL since 1998 and have the worst winning %.
  • Manly are on a six game streak v Bulldogs. They have won the last four by a combined 166-44.
  • Saving the best for last? Sunday will be the fourth time in a row the Bulldogs have played the final game of the round.
