FPL Captain Picks GW5 Analysis
Cristiano Ronaldo answered some critics last weekend with a sensational return to the Premier League, and he sits at the top of our Captain’s Table. Some may argue it was only against Newcastle, who have the worst expected points so far this season, but he has a pretty handy record against West Ham too. Throw in another goal in Champions League midweek and there’s plenty of reasons to give him the C this weekend.
Wondering where Bruno Fernandes is? Well he’s down in 15th with a quietish period since blowing everyone away in GW1. A return of just one assist in four games v West Ham doesn’t help. Mason Greenwood and Paul Pogba feature in our top ten, but you aren’t going to take them over Ronaldo surely.
Liverpool have plenty of great options and a game they like. Liverpool have won eight straight v Crystal Palace. They won the last three by a combined 13-0. Woof. But who do you pick. Sadio Mane had many shots last weekend, and on a different day may have scored plenty. Mo Salah looks as mo-gnificent as ever and must always be a candidate for captain. Look at his numbers v Crystal Palace – this week’s best return. Mane’s are good too, with over a goal + assist per game. But you can’t rule out the flying TAA aka Trent Alexander-Arnold. He is up to third on our Captain’s Table which is a decent achievement for a defender. But Crystal Palace have been good defensively at times this season, and coming off a superb 3-0 win over Spurs.
Romelu Lukaku is a less popular choice, and some may be turned off by the headline fixture v Spurs. But seeing how they went against Crystal Palace last weekend, who is to say that Chelsea can’t put at least three goals on against them too.
Gabriel Jesus and Riyah Mahrez are good outside choices given their game is at home to Southampton. Man City (W11 D1) are undefeated in their last 12 games at home to Southampton and for the Saints – no team conceded more than Southampton’s 22 goals in six games away to big six clubs last season. The only worry then is Pep.
Jamie Vardy also sneaks into the top ten, but Leicester are last for shots this season, and Brighton keep things pretty tight.
TOP TEN CAPTAIN PICKS STATS
For your consideration are the below key stats from last season’s FPL for the Top Ten players from our Captain’s Table.
FPL Captain Picks GW4 Final Say
HELLO – Mo Salah – we hurt ourselves by taking Mo over Ronaldo last weekend, but look at that record v Crystal Palace. Hopefully he has those penalty misses out of his system.
CALL ME MAYBE – Romelu Lukaku – look past the fixture and into his form and stats. You might have him as captain with very few others.
GOODBYE – Harry Kane still building back into form we presume after a long off season, but hard to Spurs beating and can they score against Chelsea?
