FPL | 20-21 Premier League Goalscoring Trends + Assists

The new Premier League season is not far away, and so is the new Fantasy Premier League, so to continue our series of FPL articles for the season we look back on last season’s Premier League Goalscoring Trends.

Of course goals and assists are key to a successful FPL season, but we have dived a little deeper to check for trends into where and who the top FPL point scorers from last season scored their goals and provided assists.

There’s splits by Home/Away, against the big six clubs, and against table position at the time of playing and final league position.

Read on for the 20-21 Premier League Goalscoring Trends and stay tuned for the ongoing 2021-22 and look below for other FPL articles we have already produced.

Premier League Goalscoring Trends – OVERALL SUMMARY

Here are the trends for the top point scorers of the 20-21 FPL season.

For the below we have combined both goals and assists.

It gives a quick reference for all of last season’s top players and who and where they are most likely to score goals/assists. Perhaps handy for that captain decision. For instance you can check the home and v Big Six stats before the game for likelihood of scores.

For example Kevin De Bruyne at home v non big six is very likely, compared to Mahrez away from home and against big six opposition.

We’ll have up to date 21-22 season details as the season progresses.

There’s more details, possibly more than you’ll ever need below.

GOALS/ASSIST TOTAL BREAKDOWN

GOALS/ASSIST TOTAL PER GAME SPLIT

Further to the above how about the goals + assist total per game in addition to the % breakdown.

This is possibly even more accurate as it factors in the number of games as it is at a per game level.

FPL 2021-22 Goalscoring 20-21 Trends Overall per Game

GOALS/ASSIST TOTAL PER GAME % COMPARISON TO OVERALL

Taking the above visual even further is getting that goals + assist total per game and working out the % comparison to each player’s overall goals + assist total per game.

We have each player’s opposition ratings listed. Big 6 means any of the big teams who trieds to escape to a Super League. Top 6 is a team that finished in the top 6 at season’s end last season. Home v Away is pretty self explanatory.

E.g. Let’s look at Mo Salah. The visual says he is 11% more likely to score against non big six and away from home but surprisingly down on usual form against the bottom six sides. This has a lot to do with Liverpool’s poor run at home v lower opposition last season.

This is for the 20-21 season and will feature in our 21-22 articles soon.

FPL 2021-22 Goalscoring 20-21 Trends % v Overall

Premier League Goalscoring Trends – HOME AND AWAY

First cut of the 20-21 Goalscoring and Assist data is whether the top FPL point scorers from last season is more likely to do the business at home or away.

The home scorers are headed by Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez, who are you’ll find out later are less likely to do it against the bigger sides.

But the next two best home scorers – Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Jack Grealish are more likely to score against better opposition.

Two defenders lead the away scorers through their assists.

Leading goal scorer and assister Harry Kane was quite consistent with the home and away scoring.

Premier League Goalscoring Trends – v BIG SIX CLUBS

So here is the breakdown of the goal scoring and assist supplying stats for last season’s top players against the big six clubs.

Big six clubs are the big six by stature, or easily summed up as the big clubs who tried to form the breakaway league last season.

As for the stats of goals and assists v big six club Trent Alexander-Arnold tops the big six % with over half of his goals and assists coming against the big six.

Aston Villa players are next best, assisted by a 7-2 hammering of Liverpool earlier in the season. Gundogan underlines his surge during last season with a solid 33% of his goals and assists coming against the big six.

Over to the other side and three of the top point scorers from last season are down the lower end of the big six scorers – Fernandes, Kane and Salah.

Some could call them flat track bullies, or possibly better is that they take their chances against the less glamorous opposition.

Of course you wouldn’t dare dump Fernandes, Kane or Salah for a lack of goals against the big six, but something worth noting for those captain choices down the track.

Premier League Goalscoring Trends – v LEAGUE POSITION (End of Season)

To the first of our two looks at goals scoring and assists against league position.

This look is viewing against the top six / bottom six and in between we’re calling the mid eight. And the position is based on the end of season position. Which is similar to the big six above, but swaps Spurs and Arsenal for Leicester and West Ham.

This truly shows if there are some flat track bullies in the top scorers.

At the top end Stuart Dallas and Jack Grealish are your only players to return 50% of their goals/assists v top six opposition last season. Foden is up there too which would be handy if Grealish moves to Manchester.

A trend from the non big six scoring continues with Mount, Iheanacho and Mahrez scoring the most against bottom six clubs. For Mahrez it could be more about rotation than anything, but it reinforces that Chelsea went quite as good against the bigger and better teams last season.

Interesting that Liverpool duo Salah and Mane do their best scoring against the middle eight side, if fact the top four for middle eight scorers all came from Liverpool.

Premier League Goalscoring Trends – v LEAGUE POSITION (Running)

This is a slightly different cut from the visuals above, as it is based on league position at the time of playing their opponent.

It is slightly warped with the two Manchester clubs starting the season off slow and missing a game.

Premier League Goalscoring Trends – Goals + Assists by Month in 2020-21

One final cut of data for goalscoring and assists last year is the when. Who got off to a quick start, or who finished the season off in style.

The much maligned (before last season) Patrick Bamford ended up one of the more consistent scorers by month last season.

It shows Salah going through a mid season slump with his team when they couldn’t score or win at home.

And shows a drop off late in the season for Bruno Fernandes. Given he went to Euros as well it could be a factor early this season too.
