The Easter Bunny has been and gone, and rugby league is here to help with any chocolate related hangover. So with that fatigue in mind, one may not feel like doing their NRL Tips this week. So to help we offer our Alternative NRL Round 5 Tips Alternative for this week.
Instead of allowing the competition admin to give you the away teams for when you don’t care about who you tip, why not take on board our weekly Alternative NRL Tipping method instead.
Each week there’s a new theme, and occasionally it will have nothing to do with rugby league. Just the way we like it. This week is all about nothing – or more to the point – zero points.
In addition to that is a whole bunch of barely interesting stats for the round of NRL ahead. Impress your neighbours and fellow passengers by stealing them and sharing.
Good luck with your Alternative NRL Round 5 Tips if you choose to use them.
NRL Round 5 Tips Alternative – Gurgler v Zero Points
So here are this week’s alternative tips. The method to how it works is below.
METHOD TO THE MADNESS
Since some of the rugby league talk and our NRL Round Results Review is about the Bulldogs scoring zero points in three straight games we thought why not check the history for zero points this week.
We have every team’s results from 1998, then worked out the % of games in which each team has scored zero points.
The higher the percentage, the more likely that team is to score zero points this week, and so they are less likely to win.
Long bow sure, but they are called alternative tips…
We have the full zero points % visual in the last section.

NRL Round 5 Tips – Barely Interesting Stats
- Broncos have lost their last six Thursday games and 13 of their last 15. Thanks goodness they aren’t on every second Thursday this season.
- Souths have won eight of their last nine matches against QLD opposition.
- Manly have won just once in their last 13 matches, but have at least won two of their last four on a Friday night.
- Warriors and Manly have only met twice on a Friday. The New Zealand side have won both.
- Both Penrith and Canberra have won their last six games on a Friday.
- Gold Coast have the worst record on a Saturday of any team with a win rate of just 30%. It’s even worse since 2016 at just 25%. Boringly, Melbourne have the best Saturday record.
- Melbourne have lost their last three away games against Sydney opposition and won just two of their last seven.
- Cronulla have lost six straight away games v Sydney opposition on a Saturday.
- Wests Tigers have won their last four at home to Queensland sides. The Cowboys have lost their last nine away to non-Queensland sides.
NRL Round 5 Tips – Barely Interesting Graphs
ZERO POINTS
To go a little further than just determining tips from each team’s zero point hauls, here is the full graph of each team’s zero point percentage.
Manly might be struggling at the moment, but are best for lack of point. Melbourne being the boring overachiever in just about every statistic since 1998 are second.
In a nice slice of coincidence the only two teams with the exact same % of zero point games are playing each other.
Canberra and Manly are the winners of the team with the longest run without a duck egg – both teams last zero pointer came in 2013.
2013 was a busy year for zero points as per the last visual where we have every season for every team in a nice little grid.
