2020 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix Result Review – The Great and Grape

Our great and grape preview of the 2020 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix Result is here, a race that was livened up at the end with a Safety Car which up to that point been a little dull.

Lewis Hamilton won again, but he had to work harder than usual this time, needing to get past two cars to win. He did this with the better pitstop strategy, and his main competition took care of themselves with Bottas having car trouble and Max Verstappen’s tyre exploding late.

Some great point finishes for some drivers were lost, with Gasly having car trouble and George Russell throwing away his first point under the safety car.

As ever the great and the grape ratings are here, as well as all of our other Driver of the Year points and race rating. Plus graphs in case there wasn’t enough numbers already.

So sit back and enjoy the 2020 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix Result Review

2020 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix Result – THE LAPS THAT MATTERED

Didn’t see the race live? Don’t have time to watch the whole race? Well here are the top laps where stuff happened. Normally it is five or ten, so you know it was a good race if there’s more than ten.

We write these live as we go, sort of like a minute by minute for the football.

Lap 1 – Bottas heads off Hamilton from the line, and Max gets ahead of the Briton too by the first corner. Behind them Ricciardo had a decent start for a change and overtook Gasly for fourth after the Frenchman got blocked by Hamilton into the first corner. Leclerc gets ahead of Albon, Behind them all Magnussen finds trouble on the first lap and no surprise Vettel involved in the contact continuing his miserable season. And surprise, surprise Lance Stroll breaks his front wing by running into Ocon’s right rear tyre.

Lap 6 – They said there would be not much overtaking in this race, so the first non first lap movement came on the sixth lap when McLaren of Norris and Sainz swapped 9th and 10th places.  told you so the drivers say.

Lap 9 – Pierre Gasly’s great work all weekend comes to nought as his team advise him to box the car and retire. What a shame. Although given the pace of the front three and distance already away another win was unlikely.

Lap 14 – Leclerc, Norris pit early for tyres. Ocon does too for Renault, meaning a fair sized strategy salami is coming Ricciardo’s way as he really struggles on the soft tyres.

Lap 15 – The teams have acknowledged that the race was boring as f— so far, so just about everyone except the top three pit. Leclerc nearly runs off the track trying to overtake Ricciardo.

Lap 18 – Sainz pits, and ends up ahead of his own team mate for 13th.

Lap 19  – Max Verstappen pits and rejoins 3rd behind the Mercedes. Bottas does so a lap later. Yep, that’s all we got at the moment.

Lap 24 – Lewis Hamilton setting a bunch of fastest laps. He’s the only one out of the fancied drivers who hasn’t pitted. And providing the main on track action.

Lap 28 – Some action involving cars trying to get past Kevin Magnussen.

Lap 29 – Ocon retires, which makes zero difference to the race. Until a Virtual Safety Car is called. This gives Lewis Hamilton the perfect gift as he can now make the pitstop without losing as much time. He exits first. A big change from Monza where he got screwed by the safety car.

Lap 39 – Verstappen is pressuring Bottas for second. Vettel finally pits from fourth, and it sums up his season. Awful pitstop and he falls behind other teams.

Lap 43 – Bottas runs wide at the second last corner, and whilst Verstappen doesn’t take advantage straight away, he does by the first corner of the next lap.

Lap 49 – Kimi Raikkonen finally pits from fourth and ends up 12th.

Lap 51 – Footage pans to Max Verstappen in the gravel trap at the Villeneuve corner with a shredded right rear tyre.

Safety Car comes out. Bottas gets to pit for new tyres, but Hamilton misses out initially. He pits next lap. Keeps lead.

Lap 53 – Footage pans to George Russell who appears to have crashed towards Acque Minerale. He loses his first points scoring drive ever. He’s binned it warming up his tyres behind the safety car.

Lap 55 – Safety Car still going, nearly everyone has pit. Not Ricciardo, Leclerc or Albon. Aside from Verstappen and Russell, Perez is the big loser, losing a potential podium, for now….

Lap 58 – Safety Car disappears, and the two Mercedes take it easy up the front, but further behind it is action a plenty. Perez and Kvyat have the fresh tyres and the Russian gets by Albon, Perez and Leclerc and is up to 4th. Perez gets past Albon who then spins on the restart lap.

Lap 63 – Lewis Hamilton wins, and with Bottas second Mercedes win the Constructors Championship. And for a mere seventh time in a row. Ricciardo holds onto third which is great for him and you wonder about transfer remorse. Kvyat finishes fourth which is a great result for him, but probably not his team, as rumours have it he’ll probably get the arse for next season. Double points scores for McLaren and Alfa Romeo, one of those teams much happier with their double return than the other.

2020 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix – RACE RATING

We rate the 2020 Emilia-Romagna F1 Grand Prix so we know which races to go back and watch in the off season or one to simply remember the winner for the post season quiz nights.

SEASON IMPORTANCE – 8/10

Mercedes win the constructor’s title, so reas0nably important.

ON TRACK ACTION – 6/10

Early days it was much like a 90’s end of season review VHS/DVD, it was a bunch of cars making pitstops.

Although there were some usual antics at the start from Magnussen, Stroll and Vettel. A likely trio if ever we did see one.

Kevin Magnussen provided some action as his early pitstop means he eventually held up Ricciardo, Leclerc, Albon, Kvyat and McLarens, which saw some close-ish racing.

A good Verstappen-Bottas battle, and then the late safety car came which brought a bit more action.

ENDING 8 / 10

A dull race was enlivened with first Verstappen causing a Safety Car, and George Russell’s crash extending it. Leaving a late race sprint, between the lower podium-midfield pack that is. Mercedes untouchable.

OVERALL RATING 22 / 30

Strangely if you add the three scores together it looks like a decent race. Didn’t feel that way watching most of it.

2020 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix Result – Great & Grape

Here we go through the field and highlight the three drivers we think deserve a little extra love, and one driver whose had the grapest weekend of all.

These points get added to our Driver of the Season. 3-2-1 for the Great and minus one point for the Grapest races.

It used to be called the good, bad and ugly, but everyone is using that now. And who doesn’t like grapes.

THE GREAT  – 1. LEWIS HAMILTON

Just too good today, and another step closer to another title. He may have the best car, but he wins a lot more races than Bottas.

THE GREAT – 2. DANI KVYAT

A nicely timed reminder that this former Red Bull driver isn’t finished yet. Drove solidly throughout the race with some nice overtaking. With the other former Red Bull driver  – Pierre Gasly – confirmed for the team next season, Kvyat is struggling for a seat if the rumours of another junior Red Bull driver being promoted is true.

THE GREAT – 3= SERGIO PEREZ

Good drive from the Mexican, who looked to be pulling off his usual special result. Went long on his tyres for track position, lost out when he pitted under Safety Car for fresh tyres and a late race burst, Ricciardo stayed out and took his podium. Like Kvyat, in trouble of not racing next season.

THE GREAT – 3= DANIEL RICCIARDO

A second podium in three races and consolidated fourth in the championship. Didn’t have it his own way when struggling on soft in his first stint. Was under pressure from other drivers almost all race without error. Did well in the end to hold off drivers on fresher tyres.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

Kimi Raikkonen Ran longest of all for the first stint, nearly 50 laps. Got a few points as reward. More ahead next season as he in returning in 2021.

Max Verstappen  Got in front of Lewis Hamilton at the start, but lost out when Lewis had a longer first stint. Lost second place when his right rear tyre exploded.

Pierre Gasly Qualified fourth which was some effort. Car troubles ended a promising race.

THE GRAPE – ALEX ALBON

Seems to really not want the Red Bull drive next season. Given opportunity to shine, coincidentally by his own team mates demise, but threw it away on the first lap after the Safety Car let them fend for themselves.

DIS-HONOURABLE MENTIONS

Lance Stroll Involved in first lap and struggled to make the top ten from that point. Can thank the team’s owner for his drive next year.

Sebastian VettelSet for some points after doing a long first stint, but stuffed by his team’s awful pitstop. But fighting for scraps of the top ten is hardly where you would have though a Vettel-Ferrari level would have been.
