It was another great gameweek of the Premier League last weekend, but VAR slightly ruined all the fun. So why not use the dastardly VAR as a method for some Alternative Week 4 Premier League Predictions 

This continues our alternative way of selecting Premier League winners from last season and the first two weeks so far. Some of them based on football stats, and some have a very obscure link to football or news events of that week.

Given VAR can influence a game dramatically, we have some stats to see who benefitted most last season and then determine a winner from there.

Time for a football stat to pick Premier League winners after a few Covid related methods.

This article from ESPN on VAR decisions shows which teams benefitted the most from VAR last season.

So our theory is that teams that benefitted the most last season will probably do so again this season, so the better the net result score of VAR decisions, the more likely that team is to win.

We say anyway.

Promoted sides use and average of the three promoted teams from last season. Which wasn’t great.

Week 4 Premier League Predictions – Best of Barely Interesting Stats

Also from our full preview, we have the best of our barely interesting stats from the weekend’s fixtures. And who doesn’t love stats.

 

  • This is the first meeting between Chelsea and Crystal Palace in October that has been played at Chelsea. Three games have all been at Selhurst Park.
  • The away side hasn’t won this game since 1983, and that was Everton.
  • Leeds have won 50% of the matches since 2000. But they have met only once since 2004 when Leeds were last in the Premier League.
  • Man City have scored five, four and three goals away from home in their last three away games. So two goals is due then.
  • Man City have won just two of ten matches between these sides in October. And not since 1967. Man City haven’t scored in the last five games in October v Leeds.
  • Burnley haven’t won at Newcastle since 1976. The year the VHS video tape was released.
  • Newcastle haven’t scored a goal v Burnley on a Saturday since 1982, four games ago.
  • Southampton v West Brom have never met on a Sunday. These two sides are currently last and second last for Key Passes per game.
  • Leicester have won just one of the last seven clashes West Ham in October.
  • Sheffield United are one of seven teams who have yet to score a goal in the league this season throughout the four English divisions. They are the only Premier League club and join three Championship sides and three League Two sides. There are no League One sides on zero goals.
  • Sheffield Utd have conceded fewer goals than 10 other league sides this season.
