Premier League Week 12 Barely Interesting Stats
LEICESTER GOING TO DO IT AGAIN? NOT QUITE.
With Leicester up to second after Man City’s loss to Liverpool, more than a few are starting to talk titles. But as much as we have enjoyed watching Leicester all season, it seems less likely.
There are quite a few stats where Leicester are ahead at the same stage of their Premiership winning season, and one key reason why not…
- Leicester have one more points this season than 15-16 (26 v 25)
- Leicester have scored more goals at the same point (29 v 25)
- They have also conceded less than half the goals (8 v 20)
- Their second position is higher than the third they were sitting at at the same stage in 15-16
- Jamie Vardy is only one goal behind at the same time in 15-16 and has the same number of assists (11 v 12 + 2 assists)
The big difference is Liverpool are eight points away, and in 15-16 none of the big six teams really got their season going and Leicester took full advantage. While you could argue that five of the six top teams are having an off season or a transition season due to transfer bans, you can’t argue that Liverpool look dominant after seeing off their biggest challenge on Sunday. Never say never, but.
For the record, in 15-16 at the same time, Liverpool were 10th with 17 points.
NOT ALL DOOM AND GLOOM FOR RELEGATED SIDES YET
After Watford won the battle of the basement at Norwich on Friday, we felt it a good time to delve into some relegation stats from the past 10 seasons based on this point of the year – 12 games / 3rd International break.
The bootom three as it stands – Watford 8pts, Southampton 8pts, Norwich 7pts.
- Four teams have had fewer points than the current bottom three at this point in the season and survived – Crystal Palace (17-18 5pts), Swansea (16-17 6pts), Sunderland (15-16 6pts), Wigan (11-12 6pts)
- Out of the 30 bottom three sides over the past 10 seasons as of this point, 15 of them have survived including Southampton in 12-13 with 8 points.
- As for the sides eventually relegated that were not in the bottom three as of this point, the highest number of points after 12 games and still managed to get relegated is 16 points from Burnley in 09/10. That would currently cover Man Utd in 7th down who could still be in danger. Good news for Sheffield Utd fans though.
- A more realistic points tally is the 11.6 average of points of teams not in the bottom three yet but still relegated. An 12 point cut off would mean just Aston Villa are in danger. Perhaps it could be a boring bottom three race after all.
Barely interesting is that Norwich and Southampton have the same result sequence in the last seven games – LLLDLLL. Although only won side lost by nine at home.
FIRST v SECOND RESULTS
It is not all over yet according to the results of first v second from the past 10 seasons.
In the 20 matches played by the eventual table toppers, nine games have been won by the team that went on to win the premiership, eight wins for the team that finished second, and three draws.
Significantly, the number of matches that are won by the eventual second is much more heavily weighted in the past 5 seasons.
RICHARLISON FIRING FOR EVERTON, FOR NOW
Richarlison is doing a fine job for Everton right now, but as always be wary of the second half season slide.
He has three goals so far this season, but he’d better fill his boots now, as after January it gets a little Hubbard.
Richarlison’s record after January the past two seasons is 34 games, 4 goals.
Although worth noting that he scored 3 goals and 1 assist in December last season.
QUICK HITS
Bournemouth will probably be happy to be sitting in ninth right now. Fans of symmetry will like their current record of Four wins, Four draws, Four losses, 15 Goals scored and 15 Goals conceded.
Only the bottom three have won fewer games than Spurs.
At this stage in 13/14 Arsenal were on top by four points.
