2019 British Grand Prix Results – The Great and Grape

Here are the 2019 British Grand Prix results, along with our race rating, the internet’s shortest review, plus we hand out the points for the best and worst of the race and all the stuff in between.

Hot on the heels of the race of the season so far in Austria, the 2019 British Grand Prix wasn’t half bad either.

It ultimately ended up in a record sixth British success for Lewis Hamilton, and featured yet another Vettel-Verstappen clash, but there was so much more going on.

For more, and sometimes less on the 2019 British Grand Prix results and review, read on.

2019 BRITISH GRAND PRIX IN 50 WORDS OR LESS

Lewis Hamilton wins his sixth British Grand Prix, but spent the first part of the race behind teammate Bottas who he briefly raced with. A safety car helped Hamilton into the lead. Behind the first were some great examples of racing between Verstappen and Leclerc, and some less fine examples featuring Verstappen and Vettel.

2019 BRITISH GRAND PRIX RESULTS – 5 LAPS THAT MATTERED

For those who haven’t seen the race yet, we highlight the big 5 laps of moments that mattered. It could save you time and allow you to fast forward through your watch.

LAP 4 – Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas dice for the lead. Hamilton got by at Brooklands only for Bottas to snatch back the lead at Copse. Two races in a row with a dice for the lead. Imagine that.

LAP 13 – Leclerc and Verstappen pit together and exit together even closer. A prelude to an epic battle.

LAP 18 – And the Leclerc – Verstappen battle goes on.

LAP 20 – Antonio Giovinazzi spins off brigning out the safety car, and affecting most of the top six drivers.

LAP 37 – Sebastian Vettel, who was running third at the time battles with Max Verstappen, and it ends in tears on Lap 37 as Vettel rear-ends Verstappen. Both go flying off the road, but recover.

2019 BRITISH GRAND PRIX RESULTS – RACE RATING

Was it a good race? Well here’s our sort-of scientific rating out of 50.

SURPRISE – 4/10

In the end Lewis Hamilton won a British Grand Prix, Mercedes were quickest, Verstappen and Leclerc are going better than their team mates, and Vettel crashed. The only surprise was the quality of racing.

SUSPENSE – 7/10

The racing brought suspense in itself, and it was tense at the top of the race for a while.

RACING – 10/10

Whilst there was no battle for the lead in the final laps like Austria, there was everything else. Verstappen v Leclerc was a battle for the ages.

SIGNIFICANT EVENT – 9/10

Another Vettel – Verstappen clash was the big event of the race.

SEASON DEFINING – 8/10

Mercedes dominate again, Vettel makes another mistake, and Verstappen and Leclerc look set to battle it out for best of the rest. For now.

TOTAL RACE RATING 38/50

A great follow up to the Austrian Grand Prix, and perhaps F1 has turned the corner for entertainment.

2019 BRITISH GRAND PRIX RESULTS – GREAT or GRAPE

Who was king of the road,? Who was the villain? Who stunk up the place? Who outperformed expectations? Or was just plain unlucky? We split up the best of the best and worst of the worst with Great and Grape of the 2019 French Grand Prix results.

THE GREAT

LEWIS HAMILTON (Best of the Best)
Qual 2nd – Race 1st

Why so great? –  Wins a record sixth British Grand Prix, and his many thousands of fans love it almost as much as he did. Defied team orders for an additional pitstop. Set fastest lap on old tyres anyway. Out to a 39 point Championship lead.

VALTTERI BOTTAS
Qual 1st – Race 2nd

Why so great? –  Stole pole position off Lewis Hamilton, and led the early laps, even having the audacity to pass his team mate back on Lap 4. Whilst there may be disappointment in a second place, he is almost 50 points ahead of Verstappen in the Championship.

CHARLES LECLERC
Qual  3rd  – Race  3rd

Why so great? –  Started third, finished third, and is now within 3 points of his team mate Vettel. Has now secured four podiums in a row, and won driver of the day for Silverstone. Raced well against Verstappen.

PIERRE GASLY
Qual  5th  – Race  4th

Why so great? –  Looked a little better in qualifying, and even led one of the earlier sessions from the weekend. Finished a credible fourth, benefiting from his team mate’s issues. A rare opportunity to shine in the great section after a horrible season thus far.

MAX VERSTAPPEN
Qual  4th  – Race  5th

Why so great? –  Despite the accident with Vettel, he is looking like he might take the fight to the Mercedes in the second half of the season. His racing with most cars was tough but fair. Hopefully we get a Hamilton v Verstappen scrap for the lead soon.

CARLOS SAINZ
Qual  13th  – Race  6th

Why so great? –  Best of the rest, and yet another promising show from McLaren this weekend. Made up seven places from his starting position, and beat his young team mate home. Held off Ricciardo nicely in the last part of the race.

LANDO NORRIS
Qual 8th – Race 11th

Why so great? – Decent Q3 which saw he get P8, and he jumped past Ricciardo from the grid to run 7th early. Trumped by a pitstop call, he finished 11th, which is usually not good enough to join the great of the weekend, but potential is well and truly there.

GEORGE RUSSELL
Qual 19th – Race 14th

Why so great? – Continues to shine at the back of the grid. Actually managed to finish ahead of a Ferrari, which was nice for a change. Must look upon his fellow F2 rival above with a little bit of envy given their relative car strengths.

THE GRAPE

SEBASTIAN VETTEL (Grapest Race)
Qual 6th – Race 15th

Why so bad? – Another accident whilst racing. This time it is was with Verstappen heading to the final corner. Whilst Max does make it hard to overtake, it looked like just another avoidable accident, and the F1 stewards agreed, with a 10 second penalty to add salt into the wound of a 15th place finish. 6th place in qualifying was pretty grape, but was running 3rd at the time of the Verstappen clash, making the weekend’s end result that bit worse. His team mate is close in points now too, so he may not be able to call upon any favours soon either.

ANTONIO GIOVINAZZI
Qual 11th – Race DNF

Why so bad? – Outqualified Kimi Raikkonen, and then wasted that off the start. Eventually got up to 10th place when he spun into retirement and brought out the Safety Car.

KEVIN MAGNUSSEN / ROMAIN GROSJEAN
Qual 14th/16th – Race DNF

Why so grape? – Team mates running into each other is never a good thing. Grosjean should now be quite worried for his Haas seat for next year.

1 point for Finishing ahead of team mate, although this is subjective if need be. Especially in the case of a DNF. Or incompetence on bothdriver’s behalf.

3 points for a Race win, 2 for Podium, 1 for Fastest Lap.

1 point for most overtakes on the first lap. 0.5 if it is shared, no matter how many drivers share it.

2 points for Pole Position, 1 for a Front Row start.

1 point for Best of the Rest in Qualifying and Race.

-1 point for an avoidable accident or silly incident.
