EVERYDAY NEWS – The Social Media Lifeline

A Brisbane man has backflipped on his decision to quit Facebook thanks to a new video game group.

Geoff was getting tired of the constant negativity, clickbait content, and bad news on Facebook and was preparing to delete his account.

Then – while scrolling on his lunch break at work – he saw a post from Video Game Nostalgia and decided to join.

“I thought it’d be fun for a while until the trolls took over and ruined it. When that happened I would punt Facebook for good,” said Geoff.

But he was pleasantly surprised by the overall positiveness.

“Not only was there no trolls, but I had a number of pleasant conversations about old video games and the majority of people were supportive and took the discussions seriously. It brought back a lot of wonderful memories of the games I spent hours and hours playing growing up,” said Geoff.

“I used to be in the general nostalgia group, but it was full of grumpy old people who wished they were still young and thought everything now was ‘too woke’. Or they used the nostalgia as an excuse to be horribly racist and bigoted. And I had to leave a few TV show fandom groups when they became too political.”

At the moment, Geoff is focusing on this new group and blocking other problematic pages he used to be in.

“I used to waste so much time doomscrolling because I was bored, but scrolling on the VGN page feels worthwhile as there’s some great discussions. But I’m still ready to leave if things turn nasty – just incase.”
