2024 US F1 Grand Prix Preview – Race Potential Rating

F1 2023 - Fabi Preview Index Feature Image

The Gurgler does like to use some obscure drivers in our Race previews and report, so who better to use than Teo Fabi to determine a race rating system.

So before each race we give a rating out of ten for four key category that are loosely based on each letter of Teo Fabi’s surname. Don’t know who Teo Fabi is, you should.

FAST? 6 / 10 – The track looks like a microscope, and the F1 drivers will be scrutinised heavily indeed. There’s some fast parts, as this track is a Frankenstein of an F1 circuit, but at least they took the better bits and pieces of the better tracks. But creating it feels a bit like a cheat, putting bits together. Back to the question of fast, there’s enough fast bits to be interesting enough, but a fiddly section towards the end of the lap.

ACTION? 3 / 10 – Maybe it’s because this race is later in the season, and in a lot of cases the Championship is done and dusted since this race started, so we can’t genuinely remember anything ever happening of note. I’m sure stuff has happened. But that steep, uphill, wide first corner does occasionally catch a few mediocre drivers out.

BIG HISTORY? – 5 / 10 – The US F1 GP goes all the way back to the 1950’s when the Indy 500 used to count towards the F1 Championship, so there’s lots of history. Some great histories of classic tracks, and some proper terrible race circuits like around the streets of Dallas, Pheonix and Detroit. But as for Austin, it’s been a decade or so, and it’s a great track, but nothing historical aside from a couple of one-sided Championships being wrapped up.

INCLEMENT WEATHER? – 2 /10  The Weather Channel says around 13-16% chance of rain across the three days with Partly Cloudy the official forecast title. Mid level temperatures forecasted means weather won’t be a factor.

RACE RATING 40% It’s a great track mostly, and a better atmosphere than celebrity loving Miami race or the Las Vegas-ness of Las Vegas of the US based GP’s. But it isn’t a race which is circled at the start of the season.
