The Gurgler’s Premier League football coverage of the 2024/25 season continues with match reviews of selected games throughout the season, including this edition of a summary of the Ipswich v Liverpool match which ended Ipswich 0 Liverpool 2.
But this is no ordinary review, in fact, it’s barely a review. People don’t have enough time these days, so we pack as much information into a one-minute read as we can. If that.
Ipswich 0 Liverpool 2 – Match Summary
FIRST HALF
Ipswich made a very solid start to their return to the Premier League, being arguably the better team in a first half that was a little light on action. And despite having a bunch of new signings, including England international Kalvin Phillips, Ipswich relied mostly on their Championship side from the previous season.
By the end of the first 45 minutes both Shots on Target belonged to Ipswich, and they led total shots 4-3, despite being way outnumbered in corner kicks. Their best chance came in the 19th minute when new defensive recruit Jacob Greaves forced a decent save from the Liverpool keeper Alisson from a header.
Liverpool had a few chances too, but the Ipswich defence was up to the task, one late one to Luis Diaz was well covered by Ipswich keeper Christian Walton, and an even later blast over the bar by Trent Alexander-Arnold would have been hard to stop if on target. Talking of stopping, the Tractor Boys kept Mo Salah reasonably quiet.
Talking of quiet, some of Ipswich’s player will need a quiet second half, as three got a yellow card in the first half. Wes Burns lucky not to be sent off for a second yellow after a pretty blatant handball which possibly deserve another booking. A slice of luck for Ipswich heading into the second half.
Liverpool looked dangerous when they put it together, but so did Ipswich with Omari Hutchinson looking the most likely, although another new signing Liam Delap also had his moments.
SECOND HALF
The second half started off as the first half ended with both sides having half chances. Ipswich may have had a claim on a penalty if it weren’t for a marginal VAR offside call in the lead up on Leif Davis. Liverpool’s Luis Diaz wasted an even better chance a few minutes later. Blowing a sitter is probably closer to the mark. Not long after that Liverpool should have gone ahead but didn’t through good defending and Jota just heading wide. Liverpool were getting on top. Liverpool were up to nine shots by now.
And sure enough on the hour mark Liverpool went ahead through the popular FPL connection of Mo Salah with the assist from the right and Jota putting the square pass away perfectly.
IPSWICH 0 LIVERPOOL 1
Five minutes later and Liverpool were two goals up, and the second scored by Mo Salah. He started the chance on the edge of the box, found Dominik Szoboszlai inside who returned serve back to Salah who put the chance away close to the keeper as easily as he can. Ipswich quickly learning how fortunes can change in the Premier League.
IPSWICH 0 LIVERPOOL 2
The 74th minute saw Ipswich’s latest signing Sammie Szmodics make his debut. And they need some of his goals.
The rest of the game fizzled out a touch with Liverpool seemingly happy with a 2-0 win, and Ipswich kept trying to no avail, but they were hardly disgraced in their first Premier League game in 22 years. Outclassed in the second half sure, but not totally hopeless. At this stage that’s all you can ask for.
