A Facebook post has led to a 40-year-old man revisiting – and conquering – one of his childhood fears.
Peter enjoys following the Nostalgic ’90s-’00s Facebook page and saw a post about an early ’90s horror board game Horrifier. The game, which featured a VHS of the ‘Hellmaster’ who guided the players, was quite revolutionary for the time.
“I remember seeing the ads for Horrifier as a kid. They genuinely scared me!” said Peter. “I wasn’t a squeamish child, but something about the Hellmaster terrified me. I refused to watch the ads more than once, let alone play the game!”
Though Peter’s fears were squashed when he found a YouTube video of the old ads.
“The Hellmaster’s just a middle-aged Polish guy with a big cloak, a bit of facepaint, green contact lenses, and blue and green lighting. He’s nowhere near as scary as I remembered.”
Falling down a nostalgic wormhole, Peter then found the hour-long VHS footage from the game on YouTube – and watched the whole thing.
“So, I underestimated the Hellmaster. This guy’s actually a great actor, looks intimidating in his get-up, and keeps up the intensity for the whole hour. It’s quite well done for the early ’90s.”
Peter ended up posting the playthrough on the Nostalgic page, which got a positive reaction.
