The Premier League may be over for another season, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get one final opportunity to present a bunch of stats and barely interesting facts from the season that was with our 2022-23 Premier League Season Stats Summary.

Here are the 2022-23 Premier League stats of choice for the season that was. Some key figures and summaries before the dive into the obscure and barely interesting stats.

2022-23 Premier League Season Stats by Team

Here we go team by team, with a visual which shows some key stats for the season as well as the team’s table position after each Game week. Some teams were busier than others.

  • Man City beat ten clubs twice this season, but lost both games to Brentford.
  • Man City drew the fewest games in 2022/23 (5).
  • Man City won all four home games v top six opposition (at time of match).
  • Erling Haaland’s expected goals total of 32.76 wasn’t far away from Southampton’s entire team total of 35.13.

  • Arsenal topped the teams for games with 2.5 goals or more this season with 26. There was a bunch of teams just behind them on 25 including Man City, Brighton, Leeds and Fulham. 17 of their 19 home games were over 2.5 goals.
  • Arsenal were the best away team this season and were the only side to average over two points per game (2.05).
  • Arsenal are the only club to remain undefeated against London clubs.
  • Arsenal kept the most clean sheets away from home this season with ten. The next best teams wee on six.

  • Manchester Utd (along with West Ham) played the most Sunday games this season with 18. Man Utd’s points per game of 1.61 on a Sunday was worse than their overall of 1.97. And they had a negative goal difference of -3.
  • Manchester Utd were the only team this season with a 100% win rate against the promoted sides.

  • Newcastle lost as many games this season as Man City (5).
  • Newcastle and Brentford drew the most games this season with 14. They were also involved in the most 0-0 draws this season with seven.
  • Newcastle had the best expected goals total this season at home with 46.61, jsut 0.02 ahead of Liverpool.

  • Counting Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday as midweek games – only Liverpool (W5 D1) and Man City (W6 D1) were undefeated. 
  • Liverpool were the only undefeated team in the last 8 GW of the season.
  • Liverpool were the only whose points per game v top six clubs was better than lower placed teams. (At time of match).
  • Liverpool won 5/5 on Wednesdays this season.

  • 15/19 of Brighton’s away games saw over 2.5 goals.
  • Brighton averaged more points per game v big six clubs this season (1.67) than promoted sides (1.17).
  • Brighton finished in the top four for expected points this season.

  • Aston Villa were 5th if you re-calculated the table from Christmas onwards and only two points behind Liverpool.
  • Aston Villa were on of five clubs not to lose a game away to bottom six teams this season along with Chelsea, Spurs, Man City and Newcastle.

  • Spurs (along with Man Utd) won all three away games promoted clubs this season.
  • Spurs lost all their away games v top six opposition this season. So did four others clubs and three of those were London Clubs including Chelsea.
  • Spurs actually were the club to outperform their expected goals by the most this season with 12 more goals than expected. Arsenal were second on 11 and Man City third on 10.
  • Spurs may have been undefeated against bottom six clubs this season but only kept a clean sheet in two of those games.

  • Brentford had the third best points per game v big six clubs this season and the second best goal difference.
  • Brentford and Newcastle drew the most games in 2022/23 (14).

  • Fulham had a 100% win record for midweek games (Tues-Thu) at home this season (three games). Man City and Liverpool also achieved this in four games, along with Newcastle (2), Wolves (1) and Nottingham Forest (1).
  • Fulham had the worst expected goals against this season, but did end up conceding 18 fewer than expected.

  • Crystal Palace, Wolves and West Ham had the fewest games with Over 2.5 goals this season at 15, or 40% of their matches.
  • Crystal Palace were one of two teams to win against any of the big six clubs this season.
  • Crystal Palace had the worst expected goals this season at home.

  • Chelsea were bottom three for point per game for the last ten GW of the season.
  • Chelsea were one of two clubs not to beat any of the big six clubs this season.
  • Based on the table position of the opposition leading into the match, and not end of season table position, Chelsea had the worst points per game against top six sides this season. They were also one of four teams not to beat a top six side – the others were Crystal Palace, Leeds and Southampton.

  • Wolves were last at Christmas with 10 points from their first 15 games and ended up 13th by season’s end with 41 points and were 11th for post Christmas table.
  • Just 5/19 home games for Wolves saw over 2.5 goals.
  • Wolves won their only Monday game this season, and so did the two Manchester clubs.
  • Wolves had the worst expected goals this season away from home.

 

  • West Ham and Man Utd played the most Sunday games this season with 18. Their points per game of 1.17 on a Sunday was slightly better than their 1.04.
  • West Ham, along with Man City and Spurs were the only teams not involved in a 0-0 draw this season.

  • Bournemouth played the most Saturday games this season with 28. Their points per game of 1.14 on a Saturday edged the overall season score of 1.03.
  • Bournemouth were one of four teams not to be beaten by a promoted side this season along with both Manchester clubs and Newcastle.
  • Bournemouth along with Wolves saw the games were both sides scored the least – 14/38.

  • Nottingham Forest spent the third highest number of game weeks in the bottom three (16), meanwhile Leeds were relegated with just seven weeks in the drop zone.
  • Nottingham Forest (D1 L3) were the only team not to win a game v promoted sides this season.
  • Nottingham Forest were the worst away team in 2022/23 with just one victory.

  • Everton were the worst team this season to underperform v expected goals. They scored 15 less goals than expected.

  • Based on the table position of the opposition leading into the match, and not end of season table position, no team played more games this season against top six opposition. Their record was W1 D2 L12.

  • Leeds kept just one clean sheet v bottom six sides this season.
  • Leeds games were the most likely to see both teams scoring this season with 26/38.

  • Southampton spent 27 of the 38 Game weeks in the bottom three.
  • Southampton lost all three games at home to promoted sides this season scoring zero goals and conceding four.
  • Southampton are the only team to have scored more points away than at home.
  • Southampton kept only one clean sheet at home this season.
