EVERYDAY NEWS – The Underwhelming Sitcom

A ‘classic’ British sitcom has not aged well.

After being previously underwhelmed by a supposedly ‘raunchy’ 1970’s sitcom, Adam decided to dive into a childhood favourite.

Airing from 1996 to 1998 (a total of 18 22-minute episodes and one 45-minute Christmas special), Adam had fond memories of watching Lady of the Manner on Thursday nights on the ABC.

“The show was pretty simple: Penny is a former socialite who is forced to move to some tiny town in England after being scammed out of her fortune. Cue lots of laughs as she struggles to adjust to her new life and somehow get her money back,” said Adam.

But his fond recollections of the show vanished when he rewatched it last weekend.

“I got 10 minutes into the first episode before I started getting bored. The idea of ‘humour’ on this show was Penny volunteering at the local fete and entering a pie eating contest. The studio audience must have been high as balls as they were roaring with laughter.”

After reading the show’s Wikipedia page, Adam discovered Manner was meant to capitalise on the success of Keeping up Appearances.

“No wonder it was so shit. Keeping up Appearances was pretty tame in hindsight, but Hyacinth was always good for a few laughs.”

Adam stopped watching Manner after that first episode and decided to go for a run instead.

Everyday News is a brand new general news/parody section of The Gurgler, and definitely not a lame rip-off of The Betoota Advocate. We swear.
