The Newcastle Knights have added a new face to their coaching staff – but it’s not who you’d expect.
Knights coach Adam O’Brien has hired his distant cousin Conan – yes, that Conan O’Brien – as a ‘Matchday Motivator’.
”I can’t remember how we’re related, as the O’Brien family is massive, but I think we’re cousins somehow,” said Adam O’Brien. “While he hasn’t won four premierships like I have, Conan’s comedy skills will help keep the boys’ spirits up on gameday.”
As part of his role, Conan will make a Zoom call to the Knights’ dressing room before kick-off and do a 15-minute set.
“I’ve told Conan he can do whatever he wants. Improv, silly voices, he can even recycle his old stuff. Whatever gets the boys laughing and happy. It’s gonna be a long season and we need to keep everyone positive, motivated, and away from certain toilet cubicles,” said Adam.
While Conan said he knows nothing about rugby league, he’s happy to help out the Knights. But any further answers were derailed by an improv’d five minute bit where Conan pretended to be a knight for some reason.
