A new season, but the same old stat-filled preview of the upcoming weekend of rugby league is here with our 2023 NRL Round 1 Tips Stats Preview + Alternative Tips.

Each week we offer up a quick preview glance for each match, a bunch of barely interesting stats, probably more than one could ever need or want.

We also offer up some alternative tips. These alternative tips are often based on a rugby league stat, and sometimes something completely absurd, and are aimed at those NRL tipsters who just can’t be bothered.

For the first weekend of the year we have based the alternative tips on each team’s first round record. And read on for more.

2023 NRL Round 1 Barely Interesting Stats Summary

Here we take the best points of interest for each match coming up this weekend, and share them with you for no cost. Feel free to share with friends and family.

Melbourne have won every first round match since 2003.

Six of the last seven losing Grand Finalists have won their first game of the next season.

Parramatta have won four straight v Melbourne.

Melbourne have won just two of their last eight away games on a Thursday to Sydney teams.

Newcastle 3 lead Warriors 1 for previous first round clashes.

Newcastle won the last clash against the Warriors at Mt Smart in 2019, but won just one of the previous 13 visits before that.

Brisbane have scored exactly 12 points against Penrith in their last four clashes. And lost all four.

Penrith have won 6/7 of home clashes v Brisbane on a Friday.

Manly have lost their last nine first round clashes.

Round 1 sees Manly and the Bulldogs play in consecutive games, as they mt in the final round of last season. Bulldogs won 21-20.

North Queensland have won their last five home games on a Saturday and scored 30 points or more in each game.

Souths haven’t won at Shark Park on a Saturday since 2009. The Sharks lead the H2H on a Saturday at home 9-3.

Souths have lost just two of their last 22 Saturday games.

Roosters have won nine straight against all Qld sides and lost one of their last 16. And four in a row at Suncorp Stadium.

Gold Coast have won eight of their last ten matches v Wests Tigers.
