The pre-Christmas rush has taken a toll on a Melbourne family.
With their holidays starting today, the O’Brien family decided to beat the nightmare Christmas Eve rush and get all their Christmas stuff done today.
It started with an 8am wakeup to get the shops before it got too crazy, get the kids’ photos with Santa, then coming home a few hours later to put up the Christmas tree, clean the spare room for Christmas Day guests, and start wrapping paper.
But the rush caught up with everyone by 3pm, with mother Sarah and children Peter and Susie fast asleep.
The father Peter was the only one still awake.
As he told Everyday News Staff Writers, he’s never been a big day sleeper. “Even when I was a kid, I’d only sleep during the day when I was sick. And when I got to uni and was up all hours studying and partying, I’d prefer to stay up all day then go to bed early and sleep all night.”
Peter took advantage of the unexpected quiet time by starting a John Grisham novel he got for his birthday. “I’ve never been a big Grisham fan, but it’s a pretty good read – some hotshot law student is blackmailed by the FBI to steal data from his new law firm. I’ve read nearly 100 pages already. Should get it knocked over pretty quickly.”
Peter is expecting a similar crash on Christmas Day.
“We’ve got a few close family members coming over, so it’ll be full-on in the morning and everyone will either be going home or fast asleep by early afternoon. I’m already working out what book to start when everyone’s carked out. Might buy myself another Grisham.”
Everyday News is a brand new general news/parody section of The Gurgler, and definitely not a lame rip-off of The Betoota Advocate. We swear.
