EVERYDAY NEWS – The Pop Star Comeback

An Australian ’90s pop group is preparing for a big TV comeback.

Known as “The Aussie Spice Girls”, ‘Five Fires’ only lasted five years (1996-2000), but released three studio albums, a live album, and played the Sydney Olympics closing ceremony. They officially called it quits in late 2000 after a short Australia/New Zealand farewell tour – on the back of their Olympics appearance – and released their live album just before Christmas as a goodbye present to fans.

After they all made one contractually obligated solo album, the five members went on different paths.

– Sarah (the unofficial leader) joined the reality TV judges circuit, which she’s been on ever since.
– Kate (the one who could actually sing) had a successful four-album solo career before moving to musical theatre.
– Emily (the loud, extroverted one) transferred to acting and had a long run on Home and Away before trying her luck in Hollywood, eventually landing a small, ongoing role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
– Emily (the fame-hungry one) moved to England, married a famous soccer/football player, and became the darling of the UK tabloids before starting a fashion line.
– Zoe (the shy one) moved back home to country NSW, married her childhood sweetheart, had a family, started writing children’s books, and sings once a year at the local school Fete.

The Stan comeback special – called The Fire is Back – will be a 30-minute interview (hosted by Karl Stefanovic) followed by a 60-minute concert. It will air sometime in December.

Five Fires’ manager Peter is excited by the special.

“Honestly, the first rehearsal felt like they’d never missed a beat. While the girls have naturally drifted apart, the original split was amicable, so everyone slipped back into routine with no dramas.”

While Peter hoped to do a proper tour off the back of the special, the members’ various schedules made that impossible.

“Mate, it was a nightmare trying to get them all in the once place. Luckily the good folks at Stan wanted to capitalise on the nostalgia factor, so they kept throwing piles of money at the girls until they made it work,” said Peter. “The girls are having fun performing together, so hopefully we can sort out a big tour next year.”
