EVERYDAY NEWS – Solving the Footy Hangover

A Brisbane man will continue his love of footy in the off-season.

While Terry (a proud Broncos man) is happy to have a break from footy during the summer – lazing infront of a long cricket Test or a bit of Big Bash in the evenings – he became unexpectedly invested in the Rugby League World Cup.

“After the way the Broncos finished, I was ready to forget about footy until February, but I watched the England v Samoa game out of curiosity and was blown away. I’d totally forgotten how great International footy was! The best part was, I could enjoy the games with zero stress or emotional involvement.”

As a shift worker, Terry was able to catch at least a couple of games live each weekend, while watching the rest on highlights. But he now wants more. The good news: he found a solution.

I remember when the NRL was suspended in 2020, the NRL website and Fox scheduled classic matches every weekend to mirror a normal round. While it wasn’t the same as live footy, it was still fun watching the old games.”

From next weekend, Terry will use his Kayo account to watch all 31 RLWC games: one on Thursday nights, one on Friday nights, and one or two on Saturdays.

“If I watch three or four games a weekend, it’ll take me about two months to watch the whole tournament. That’ll take me through Christmas and into early January. I usually watch about half the games live during the season anyway. And I can still fit in a bit of Test cricket or Big Bash for variety. The missus doesn’t care either – she usually goes up to the bedroom and watches what she wants on telly or reads a book.”

Terry’s also been motivated enough to draw up an Excel sheet, allocating the games he’ll watch each weekend.

“My son helped me with that. And he’s shown me how I can use the tables on my phone so I can keep track of what I’ve watched. It’s pretty clever.”
