POINTS OF INTEREST

A host nation has never lost the first game of their own World Cup. For the record it is W16 D6.

Ecuador have the worst winning % for international results since the 2018 World Cup of all the teams at this year’s World Cup. This brings Group A’s result down to the worst winning % for overall group too.

Bad news for Senegal as the Netherlands have never dropped a point against African nations at the World Cup.

Bad news for Ecuador too, they haven’t beaten any side they are in Group A with.

POINTS OF INTEREST

England have won both of their World Cup clashes v Asian nations by 1-0.

England have lost five of their past six World Cup games v European sides, and won 3/12 since Italia 90.

England and Wales have the fifth and fourth worst record of 2022 of the teams at this year’s World Cup.

Wales made the Quarter Finals in their only World Cup appearance in 1958 without winning a group stage game. We’re not sure if it is a record, but they drew all three of their group stage games and won a subsequent playoff to make the quarter final before losing to Brazil.

Group B has the worst overall win % for 2022 heading into this World Cup.

Saudi Arabia 1 3 2 1 1

POINTS OF INTEREST

Saudi Arabia has conceded the most goals per game at the World Cup of all the teams that are in Qatar this season. Netherlands Antilles hold the overall record, losing 6-0 in their only World Cup match in 1938.

Good news for Argentina as they are undefeated at World Cups against Asian and Concacaf nations. It’s a solid 11 straight wins for a goals scored v conceded total of 37-9.

Bad news for Saudi Arabia who haven’t beaten any of their group stage opponents. Although they did draw 0-0 with Argentina in 2012.

Argentina’s 87.5% winning strike rate in 2022 is the best alongside Brazil.

POINTS OF INTEREST

Can France break the curse? The last four European winners of the World Cup have been knocked out at the group stage. France did it in 2002.

Surprisingly, France have the worst record in 2022 of the Group D teams.

Australia have lost five and drawn one of their last two World Cups. The only point coming against Denmark, who they face again in the group stage this time.

France were also in the same group as Australia and Denmark last World Cup, and they too drew with Denmark in the group stages. It was France’s only loss on the way to winning it all.

Tunisia may struggle to get out of this group. They haven’t beaten a European side at the World Cup, with three draws in ten matches their best result.

POINTS OF INTEREST

Canada will be looking for their first ever World Cup goal this tournament.

Croatia haven’t lost to an African team at the World Cup.

Finishing in third place in the World Cup the tournament before is a real mixed bag when it comes to results for the next one. Germany won in 2010, Italy came 2nd in 1994, but after that it is one third, two knockout stage exits, one Group stage exit and four DNQ. From the last ten third place finishes.

Brazil v Serbia Preview

TABLE

POINTS OF INTEREST

Brazil have the best winning form heading into this World Cup, with a 74% winning strike rate for the four and a bit years since the last World Cup, and are averaging 2.75 points (based on W3 D1 L0) in 2022.

Brazil have a 100% record v African nations at the World Cup.

Cameroon have scored the fewest goals per game (1.1) since the last World Cup in all international games, but also conceded the second fewest (0.7).

At least Serbia have Switzerland. As they haven’t beaten African, Asian or South American teams at the World Cup, scoring zero points.

Ties? You bet. No sides at this year’s World Cup have drawn more games (as a %) in international football since the last World Cup than Cameroon and Serbia.

Uruguay (D2 L1) didn’t win at the only other Asian based World Cup in 2002. But they have won all four games at World Cups v Asian teams. Including South Korea twice.

Portugal may have a 100% winning strike rate v Ghana, but Uruguay and South Korea have a 100% against them.
