THE LAPS THAT MATTERED

Didn’t see the race live? Don’t have time to watch the whole race? Well here are the top laps where stuff happened. We write these live as we go, sort of like a minute by minute for the football, but marginally more interesting.

Setting the Scene – Loads of orange. The local fans have turned out in huge numbers to cheers for their man Max Verstappen, and he should seal the deal on current form. Hopefully the fans don’t celebrate by throwing any flares on the track like some balloon-head did yesterday.

There’s talk of Mercedes race pace, but we’ve heard that before.

It has the potential to be a pretty dull race, but with a potential for a clash or two in the first few corners. If that doesn’t happen, then you may have to rely on some out-there strategy or rain.

TOP 10 GRID – VER LEC SAI HAM PER RUS NOR SCH TSU STR

Lap 1 –  Verstappen gets off the line well, and leads into the first corner after a decent chop across the front of Charles Leclerc. Further back it looked like contact between Sainz  and Hamilton going into the first corner. A little bit of movement behind the leaders with Landon Norris overtaking George Russell for 6th and Lance Stroll up from 10th to 8th.

ORDER – VER LEC SAI HAM PER NOR RUS STR OCO MSC

Lap 2 – Kevin Magnussen slides off at pace and clips the wall, but appears to keep going somehow.

Lap 4 – Lando Norris is overtaken by George Russell for 6th. Lewis Hamilton attacking Carlos Sainz for third. Looks like the Mercedes cars aren’t going to be complete duds this weekend.

Lap 9 – Yuki Tsunoda is holding up a bunch of cars in 11th, and sadly that’s a lot of what the TV coverage is showing. But on lap 10 Fernando Alonso uses DRS to get past Gasly for 12th. Further back a replay of Kevin Magnussen and Nicholas Latifi battling. They are searching hard for interest aren’t they. For the record, of course Latifi was fighting for last.

Lap 12 – Alonso overtakes Tsunoda then pits the next lap, as the midfield runners chance their race on a different pit strategy.

Lap 15 – Carlos Sainz pits and regrets it soon after. His pitstop is 12 seconds long which is six times the standard these days. Ferrari up to their recent 2022 standards then. What is it with them and F1 basics. Perez pits also, and promptly runs over a wheel gun left out by the Ferrari mechanic.

ORDER – VER LEC HAM RUS NOR OCO PER ALB SAI STR

Lap 18 – Charles Leclerc pits from second, as does Lando Norris from his lofty position. Max Verstappen pits a lap later, leaving the two Mercedes in front for a while.

Lap 25 – Max Verstappen is closing on George Russell, who is on old tyres like his race-leading teammate. But aside from that there isn’t much happening. Worth noting Dan-nil Ricciardo is down in 18th position. He ain’t gonna be in F1 next season.

Lap 28 – Verstappen nails George Russell on the outside on turn one. He is now second and chasing Lewis Hamilton. The Mercedes pits on lap 29 to save his fans from some heartburn and comes out fifth behind Perez. George Russell pits a few laps later.

ORDER – VER LEC PER HAM RUS SAI NOR STR ALO OCO

Lap 33 – Lewis Hamilton, who took the hard tyre at his pitstop, is flying and quickly closing in on Sergio Perez. George Russell sets fastest lap too. Hamilton is genuinely in the running for a win today, as the cars in front all have to pit again.

Lap 37 – Hamilton closes in on Perez and goes for his position around he outside of turn one. The Red Bull makes his car just wide enough to keep Sir Lewis in fourth for now.

Lap 38 – Lewis Hamilton repeats the move from the lap before but completes the move this time. He has no time to savour it though, as Sebastian Vettel exits the pits and almost ruins Lewis’ work. In clear air, Hamilton sets fastest lap. George Russell gets past Perez a lap later. Mercedes are quick and don’t have to stop, cars in front do. This race could get interesting real soon.

Lap 45 – Yuki Tsunoda parks his Alpha Tauri on the circuit claiming his tyres aren’t fitted. His team says otherwise so he resumes the race very slowly. A potential Safety Car keeps its powder dry.

Lap 46 – Charles Leclerc pits from second and ends up behind the Mercedes.

Lap 47 – Yuki Tsunoda rejoins the race after a long pitstop, and promptly says there’s something wrong with his car again, and is told by the team to park the car. This brings out the Virtual Safety Car.

Lap 49 – Max Verstappen takes the opportunity to pit for new tyres. Lewis Hamilton pits for new tyres as well. So does George Russell. So this leaves the order below with tyre choice in brackets.

ORDER – VER (H) HAM (M) RUS (M) LEC (H) PER (H) OCO (H) SAI (H) NOR (S) ALO (S) STR (H)

Lap 55 – Valtteri Bottas parks his Alfa Romeo just before he first corner. This brings out the full SAFETY CAR. This leads to some ptistops for the front runners, including Max Verstappen and he comes out behind both Mercedes cars.

Lap 58 – The Mercedes drivers also pit for new tyres for some reason, as does everyone else really. Sainz and Alonso nearly collide in pit lane for fun. So confusing for tyre strategy, so here’s the order anyway, with Hamilton and Perez the only top ten drivers on Mediums, the rest are softs.

ORDER – HAM VER RUS LEC PER SAI ALO NOR OCO STR

Lap 61 – Race resumes with Hamilton leading Verstappen, this should/could be interesting. Well, that didn’t last long as Verstappen breezes past Lewis Hamilton for first place into the first corner. Verstappen has an incredible gap after just one lap – race for the win over.

Lap 64 – George Russell – on the softer tyres – overtakes Lewis Hamilton for second. And almost runs into the back of him in doing so. The change in order has made Lewis Hamilton very angry, declaring his own team has f—ed him. Ouch. Looks like it won’t be the only place he drops too.

Lap 66 – Charles Leclerc overtakes Lewis Hamilton for third. You can almost see the steam coming from the cockpit.

Last Lap – Max Versatappen cruises to yet another win, and another one at home to the 100K+ home crowd. And that sets off the orange flares. Lots of orange flares. George Russell came second and Leclerc third. Lewis Hamilton ends up an angry fourth. Good luck handling that one to his team.

FINAL ORDER – VER RUS LEC HAM PER ALO NOR SAI OCO STR

RACE RATING

Was it a good race, loads of action, tense, or just a big, fat, snooze-fest.

We rate the big race itself so we know which races to go back and watch in the off season or one to simply remember the winner for the post season quiz nights.

SEASON IMPORTANCE –  7 / 10

Red Bull and Verstappen strong as usual, but the overall picture point of interest is the return of Mercedes as a genuine front runner. For this race anyway. This doesn’t help Ferrari close the gap to Verstappen in the Championship, as now there’s a third team in the way for points. Although, Ferrari doesn’t help themselves a lot.

ON TRACK ACTION – 7 / 10

Some great overtaking and racing, and even with the front runners. Safety Cars bunched and mixed things up.

ENDING 7 / 10

So the Safety Car and multiple pitstops and tyre strategies sets up a short mini race to the finish. Verstappen kills some of the fun by making it so easy to overtake Lewis Hamilton after the race resumed under the safety car, but Mercedes killing Lewis’ race also provides interest.

OVERALL RATING 21 / 30

It looked like this was going to be a real bore-fest, and this writer may or may not have fallen asleep for ten laps and had to go back rewind the coverage. There was enough of everything here to keep one awake, with the Mercedes showing real form a welcome return. And, at the end of the day, it’s just a great track to watch the drivers master.

GREAT & GRAPE OF THE RACE

Here we go through the field and highlight the very best (Great) of the race, and the plodders, the over-ambitious, the out of luck, and simply hopeless (Grape).

These points get added to our Driver of the Season scores. Five points for a great nomination, and -5 for the worst or grapest driver in the pack. Then it is +2 /-2 for honourable or dishonourable mentions.

It used to be called the good, bad and ugly, but everyone is using that now. And who doesn’t like grapes.

THE GREAT-EST – MAX VERSTAPPEN

Win, from pole position with fastest lap. In front of the home crowd of over 100,000 fans. And rubs Lewis Hamilton’s nose in it a little. Yeah, solid claims for the greatest on the day.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

GEORGE RUSSELL – Second place, and well deserved after a great drive, and got the strategy calls right.

CHARLES LECLERC – Third is good enough, and with those points re-takes second in the Championship. Albeit way too many points behind to win Championship.

FERNANDO ALONSO – Another points finish, and this solid 6th place is ahead of a Ferrari and a McLaren, which is Alpine’s nearest competitor.

LANDO NORRIS – Another solid weekend in a car that could be much lower down the grid. And is in the case of his team mate.

LANCE STROLL – Easy to pick on Lance Stroll, and we will, but he had a good race weekend, and earned a point, and a spot in this list.

THE GRAPE-EST – LEWIS HAMILTON

Almost came close to the great-est driver of the race, but after the final pitstop and tyre choice, no driver would be more glum. Probably wouldn’t have won the race, but deserved second, and was angry about it.

DIS-HONOURABLE MENTIONS

DANIEL RICCIARDO – Qualified 17th and finished 17th, beating just Nicholas Latifi. His team mate performed the same feat, but with 7th. This is going to be a long end to his McLaren career. And likely his F1 career on form this weekend.

NICOLAS LATIFI – Last again, waste of time.

YUKI TSUNODA – Did well in qualifying, not as much in the race. Less so when he retired when he felt his tyres weren’t put on properly.
