EVERYDAY NEWS – The Indoor Cricket Challenge

A local indoor cricket team has revealed to Everyday News Staff Writers that’s they’re exploring new ways to challenge themselves.

Looking to keep fit during the off-season (and not interested in playing any football codes), a handful of emerging players from the Belconnen Blues first and second XIs formed an indoor cricket team.

Due to their superior skill level (they’ve all represented the ACT in junior cricket), ‘Macca’s Mates’ found themselves winning easily when they took it seriously. One game, against the ‘Western Raiders’, saw them pile on 220 in their 16 overs then restrict the Raiders to just 24.

Getting bored with this total domination of the social indoor teams, their captain ‘Macca’ decided to forget about taking it seriously and treat the Wednesday night competition as a ‘live’ net session.

“The boys went out for a beer another another massive win; some of them were thinking of pulling out as there was no challenge against these shit social teams,” said Macca. “So we decided, ‘bugger the opposition, let’s compete among ourselves and take the piss!’ From then on, the players with the lowest score and the worst bowling figures had to shout everyone a beer after the game. Suddenly, everyone was desperate to avoid having to shout at the bar.”

Though that didn’t work as the extra motivation made ‘Macca’s Mates’ even more untouchable – to the point that they were nearly banned because opponents were complaining that that were too good and they were ruining their weekly dose of social cricket.

“We finally found the solution: batters have two overs of batting normally, then they have to switch hands, and bowlers have one normal over and one where they bowl with the opposite hand,” said Macca. “We’re still winning comfortably, but now those hopeless ‘social’ cricketers feel they’re a chance and don’t complain as much. We’ll be out of here in a couple of weeks when summer pre-season starts and we go back to proper cricket.”

Everyday News is a brand new general news/parody section of The Gurgler, and definitely not a lame rip-off of ‘The Betoota Advocate’. We swear.
