2022-23 PREMIER LEAGUE SEASON PREVIEW
SEASON PREDICTION TABLE
So it’s Man City from Liverpool again, easy to predict that we know, but at least it’s close again, with hopefully another final day ahead like the one we have to end the 2021-22 season.
Behind the top two it gets interesting. Our stats has Arsenal as the clear third, we don’t sort of believe it either but they weren’t far behind last season and have got some handy transfers. Chelsea sneak past Spurs for the final Champions League spot.
Brighton in seventh is a bit of a surprise, but who know they may match their expected goals for a change. Newcastle in eighth is a minimum pass mark you’d think.
Down the other end we have only one of the three promoted sides to go down, and for a change it isn’t Fulham. Bournemouth will go straight back down according to out stats prediction but the points makes it at least tight. According to our data Leeds will be relegated nice and early.
1st Manchester City
Why should a neutral care?
They’ve added one of the best young strikers in the world to a side that was already bursting with outstanding attackers.
21/22 Season Stat…..
Man City were the only side in the Premier League last season to be undefeated against top six teams. That is, top six at the time of the game not final table position. Their record ended up W7 D2. Only Man City and Liverpool scored at two or more goals per game v top six sides.
2nd Liverpool
Why should a neutral care?
Sadio Mane it out, but another fresh face from the Portuguese league comes in with Darwin Nunez’s arrival. He scored 34 goals in 41 games in all competitions last season for Benfica, which included Champions League. Throw in Mo Salah and Luis Diaz and it could be attack ahoy again for Liverpool in 2022-23.
21/22 Season Stat…..
Liverpool were the only side to remain undefeated at home last season with a record of W15 D4. They also conceded the fewest goals at home too with just nine.
3rd Arsenal
Why should a neutral care?
Gabriel jesus to Arsenal makes them much more interesting, and they have a top bunch of young players with another season under their belts, and for Saka a year further away from Euros.
21/22 Season Stat…..
Arsenal are one of only three teams (other being Liverpool and Man City) to win all their away games last season against bottom six sides (at time of match). Arsenal and Man City were the only teams to win all six games v teams from the Midlands last season.
4th Chelsea
Why should a neutral care?
Raheem Sterling at Chelsea is plenty interesting. And defensive signing Kalidou Koulibaly has been threatening to join a Premier League side for years, so looking forward to see how he goes.
21/22 Season Stat…..
Chelsea were the only team to remain undefeated on a Sunday in 2021-22. Their record was W6 D3.
5th Tottenham
Why should a neutral care?
Exciting new signings. Son and Kane. Or perhaps if / when the Antonio Conte meltdown and resignation happens.
21/22 Season Stat…..
Spurs were the only team to not lose to both Liverpool and Man City last season (aside from those team themselves). Their record was W2 D2.
6th Manchester United
Why should a neutral care?
Man Utd have put all their managerial eggs into the Ajax basket of Erik ten Hag, and running out of managerial excuses. Another side interest is to see what happens with Cristiano Ronaldo.
21/22 Season Stat…..
Man Utd conceded the sixth most goals away from home last season, and the second most away after Xmas.
7th Brighton
Why should a neutral care?
To see how far off our prediction gets.
21/22 Season Stat…..
Brighton (W7 D6 L1) lost just once last season to London clubs, and conceded the fewest goals with 9 in 14 games.
8th Newcastle
Why should a neutral care?
There’s still time left for new moneybags Newcastle to spend more. But this looks like a team on the rise this season.
21/22 Season Stat…..
Newcastle were a top four side if the table started from February 1.
9th Crystal Palace
Why should a neutral care?
Aside from Brighton fans, is there a more neutral team to keep an eye on than Crystal Palace.
21/22 Season Stat…..
Wilfried Zaha was the most fouled player in the Premier League last season, averaging 3.1 per game. Second was Ivan Toney at 2.4 per game. Only Man City and Liverpool conceded fewer goals at home than Crystal Palace last season.
10th Nottingham Forest
Why should a neutral care?
Jesse Lingard’s arrival is pretty interesting. Taiwo Awoniyi also looks an interesting player to follow. And work out how our stats say Forest finish 10th. Although very few would have had Sheffield Utd as high as they finished in their first season back in the Premier League not long ago.
21/22 Season Stat…..
Manager Steve Cooper has been in the manager job less than a year, but has already been in the job longer than 50 other Football League managers. Nottingham Forest ended last season in the Championship with seven straight wins at home.
11th West Ham
Why should a neutral care?
Having David Moyes at the helm will always make this club more interesting than usual. Michail Antonio, Jarrod Bowen and Saïd Benrahma are all interesting players for a neutral.
21/22 Season Stat…..
West Ham played the fewest games on a Saturday last season with just eight. Brighton, Norwich and Watford played the most with 22.
12th Leicester
Why should a neutral care?
You just get the feeling that this could be the season where it all implodes. Jamie Vardy is fun to follow when he’s fit, which is usually only 50% of a season.
21/22 Season Stat…..
Only Norwich had a worse Expected Goals Against in the second half of last season. Leicester and Man City were the only sides to win all six games v promoted sides last season.
13th Brentford
Why should a neutral care?
Second season syndrome candidates here with no Christian Eriksen. Although if they keep Ivan Toney he will at least entertain.
21/22 Season Stat…..
Brentford were sixth for points per game from when Christian Eriksen played his first game for Brentford last season.
14th Southampton
Why should a neutral care?
A south coast derby with Bournemouth?
21/22 Season Stat…..
Southampton finished in the bottom three of the table from January 1 onward last season.
15th Aston Villa
Why should a neutral care?
Steven Gerrard as manager will always make them a side for neutral interest. Philippe Coutinho makes them interesting too, to see which way his form heads this season.
21/22 Season Stat…..
Aston Villa were good enough for tenth last season, if the table was re-calculated from the hiring of Steven Gerrard. Aston Villa’s record of W1 D2 L11 against London clubs was the second worst in the Premier League last season. Behind Watford who lost all 12 games.
16th Wolverhampton Wanderers
Why should a neutral care?
Really can’t think of one. Is Adama Traore back this season?
21/22 Season Stat…..
Wolves were one of four teams only not to beat a big six team at home last season. But were one of only five teams to win two or more games away to the big six clubs.
17th Fulham
Why should a neutral care?
Can they stay up this time? Can Aleksandar Mitrovic become even half as prolific as his 43 Goals and 7 assists last season? Will they ‘Do a Fulham’?
21/22 Season Stat…..
Aleksandar Mitrovic personally scored as many or more goals than eight Premier League teams last season.. Fulham averaged 6.1 Shots on target in the Championship last season. Only Manchester City and Liverpool beat that in the Premier League last season. The three promoted sides were the top three sides for goals scored (and a healthy gap to fourth) and in the top four for Shots on Target per Game in the Championship last season.
18th Everton
Why should a neutral care?
I guess if you’re the type of person who feels the need to stare at a car accident aftermath you’ll find some interest in Everton’s season. That, and possibly the point where Frank Lampard loses it. That said, we could be totally wrong with Everton and can be notified by mid February if that’s the case.
21/22 Season Stat…..
Everton scored the equal fewest points away from home last season with Norwich with just ten points. They won their second and third last away games of the season and that was it. Everton failed to beat a bottom six side (at time of match) away last season in five attempts. But they did win all five games at home to bottom six sides (at time of match).
19th Bournemouth
Why should a neutral care?
Because promoted sides are interesting for a while. And manager Scott Parker deserves success in the Premier League. I guess the Newcastle games will be slightly overblown because of Eddie Howe too.
21/22 Season Stat…..
Bournemouth conceded the fewest goals in the Championship last season, and lost fewer games than runaway winners Fulham.
20th Leeds
Why should a neutral care?
Can Leeds hang on to their Premier League status without Raphinha?
21/22 Season Stat…..
Leeds lost all 12 games against the big six teams last season and by the margin of 8 goals to 47.
