A fan’s fantasy footy season has fallen apart.
Peter – an avid Parramatta fan – joined a private fantasy footy comp with nine other Parra mates (through The Bench website), called The King Gutho Cup.
He was happy to make up the numbers when a call went out on their Facebook Messenger group back in February, though had only played SuperCoach on-and-off previously.
“I though it might be a bit of fun, but I was placed last in the draft, struggled to find any decent players, and soon realised I had a long season ahead. I didn’t even get any good Eels players.”
But Peter had a promising start, with his ‘Blue & Gold Legends’ team winning three games from the first eight, but disaster struck in the lead up to Round Nine.
”I had a crazy week at work, an indoor cricket grand final (which we won), and completely forgot to check my team. I lost to ‘Sterlo’s Champions’ by 60 points.”
While Peter remembered to check his team from then on, he couldn’t prevent a four-game losing streak and a slide down the ladder.
Though he managed to squeak a win during the split round, a 4-12 record has seen him anchored in the bottom two and quickly losing interest, especially with no threat of relegation to a lower division.
“To be honest, the best thing about the comp is the absolute shit chat between all the boys. Everyone’s ripping into me and saying I’ll finish last, but I don’t care. A few of the big guys spend hours studying the team lists on Tuesday nights, but I’ll do a quick team check sometime on Thursday and leave it there.“
Despite his struggles, Peter is planning to play again in 2023.
”Yeah, why not? As long as the shit chat keeps flowing between the boys, then I’m happy.”
