WOODEN SPOONERS – The Green Nostalgia

A sad Canberra Raiders fan has drowned his sorrows with a quadruple hit of nostalgia on Sunday evening.

Feeling downhearted after Penrith belted his Raiders on Sunday afternoon, born-and-bred Belconnen boy Andrew cheered himself up by watching the 1989, 1990, and 1994 Grand Finals, followed by the 2019 Preliminary Final.

“I wanted to forget about today, but still remind myself why I loved my Raiders,” said Andrew, who’s been supporting The Milk for as long as he can remember. “It actually made me feel better. We were so good in the 90s – hell, a mix of that triple-premiership team would smash our current mob. I thought about watching the Brumbies’ win against the Highlanders, but I don’t have Stan Sport, so I just watched the YouTube highlights.”

While the eight-hour marathon meant Andrew had a very late night, with the Anzac Day holiday looming, he didn’t care.

“If I’d gone to bed early, I would’ve just been thinking about our car crash of a season anyway and never gotten to sleep.”

Despite his frustration over the 2022 season, Andrew is planning to go to the rest of Canberra’s games at Bruce Stadium, starting with the Canterbury-Bankstown match on Friday May 6.

“I don’t care if we don’t win another game this year; I’m still gonna support the boys and do the Viking Clap. I might pop along to a few Brumbies games too. The Milk haven’t won a first grade premiership in nearly 30 years, so I’m used to the disappointment. Hopefully next year will be better: get rid of the deadwood, get Jamal back, and we might go alright.”
