This week’s alternative tips is based on the super moan from the Cowboys coach last weekend about referee bias. Some NRL journos agree, so we thought we’d get some data to see.
Our data below allocates one point for penalty given, going on report, sin binning and send offs. Bad Boys points we’ll call them. The team with the most Bad Boys points is less likely to win because coaches and journalists think that refs are biased.
And there’s a nice visual at the end of this to show them all.

2022 NRL Round 4 Barely Interesting Stats
MATCH BY MATCH BARELY INTERESTING STATS
Newcastle have lost both Thursday games played v Sydney sides. Manly have lost their last three Thursday clashes and won just three of 12 overall.
Manly’s last win over Newcastle pre-dates Covid. Alternatively, Newcastle are on a three game winning run covering 2020 and 2021.
The Warriors are undefeated in two games at Redcliffe and have won both games by 14 points.
New Zealand are also on a run of five straight wins v Queensland teams at home.
North Queensland have lost five straight on a Friday, scoring exactly 18 points three times. They’ve also lost nine of their last 10 Friday games.
A field goal has been kicked in four of the last five clashes between the Warriors and Cowboys and only one of them has been decided by one point.
Roosters have won five straight v Queensland sides and 11 of their last 12 matches.
St George Illawarra may have won the most recent Charity Shield game v South Sydney earlier in the year, but they have lost seven competition games in a row to Souths. And 13 of the last 15 going back to 2014.
The Dragons have also lost 11 in a row v Sydney clubs.
South Sydney have won 11 in a row on a Saturday.
Canberra have lost seven straight to Melbourne at home on a Saturday.
Melbourne have won seven straight away on a Saturday.
There’s still hope for the Bulldogs, the last four teams beaten by Melbourne to nil before the Dogs all made the top eight by season’s end.
Sharks have won three straight at Shark Park v Tigers. Wests Tigers have lost five Sunday games in a row v Sydney clubs.
Bulldogs have lost three straight v Penrith and scored just four points in total. They have also conceded 100 points in that run.
Bulldogs have lost their past 12 games on a Sunday in Sydney.
Penrith haven’t played an away game on a Sunday since 2018.
