A ‘social media celebrity’ chef has had a decline in popularity after trying to become viral.
In the beginning, Peter Parker had a small but entertaining YouTube channel called Spin a Web in the Kitchen, capitalising on having the same name as Spider-Man’s alter ego. He gave clear recipe tutorials with a minimum or fuss or theatrics and had built a loyal following.
That all changed when Spider-Man: No Way Home came out and Peter decided to go all-in on the superhero theme, wearing Spider-Man shirts in his videos, inserting Spider-Man memes and GIFs into his videos, and decorating his kitchen with Spider-Man merch. The effort paid off, as Peter went viral and became know as ‘the Spider-Man chef’.
While Peter is usually an extroverted performer (but not enough to be annoying), he’s turned the extroversion up to 1,000 in an attempt to maintain his popularity: he started using more clips and reactions, talking faster and louder, putting on more funny voices and accents, using auto-tone to enhance his voice, and even talk-singing when explaining his recipes. The new style worked perfectly for his TikTok channel, allowing him to catch people’s attention straight away, but his loyal YouTube following started to resent him, and his likes-to-dislikes ratio began to even out.
“Man, this guy’s f*****sold out! He used to be all about the food, now he just wants to be another f***** celebrity! F*** that noise!” wrote Bigboobs69 in one YouTube comment, which received 100 likes.
Peter is embracing his popularity though: he’s stopped posting new YouTube videos to focus fulltime on TikTok videos, and is currently planning a small live tour called The Peter Parker: Far from Homecoming Tour, also sponsored by TikTok (which should protect him from getting his arse sued by Marvel and Disney).
Everyday News is a brand new general news/parody section of The Gurgler, and definitely not a lame rip-off of ‘The Betoota Advocate’. We swear.
