WEEKEND WASH UP | Shane Warne, Test Cricket, F1 Russia, Manchester United

Welcome to the Gurgler’s Weekend Wash Up. See what we did there? Gurgler, Wash Up? Down the drain? Anyways, the reason for the Wash Up is to have a look back on the weekend of sport that was.

But instead of letting us do the wrapping, we open it up to our readers. We supply a variety of choice sporting questions from the weekend and deliver the results in visuals. We also take the best free form comments along the way.

This week focuses on the massive loss of Shane Warne, the bore-fest that is Australia v Pakistan, F1 responding to Russia, and Manchester United’s fall from greatness.

So if you’re into looking back, or catching up, here is the latest Weekend Wash Up.

WAS OUR WEBSITE TOO HARSH ON SHANE WARNE?

weekly wrap march 8 - shane warne

The cricketing world, and beyond, woke up to the shocking news of Shane Warne’s passing on Saturday, and the world had lost a sporting icon.

It was with a touch of guilt too, as our website has consistently roasted Shane Warne for his commentary and general arrogance around his views on the game.

So we’re sad for the passing of one who could truly be described as legend. But we also stand by some of the light hearted digs at his commentary. He was painful, but no need to get into the negatives.

Our readers voting tells us we were too harsh, so fair enough.

COMMENTS

Your website sucks in general, so no surprise people voted against you.

DOES ANYONE STILL BELIEVE THE VACCINE WAS INVOLVED IN SHANE WARNE’S DEATH?

weekly wrap march 8 - shane warne booster

Much to the shock, then after thinking about it some more non shock, the Anti Vaxxers came out in force after Shane Warne’s death because he recently had a booster.

Well our voting still had around 10% of the people who still think that, despite it being ruled out by medical professionals.

But things being ruled out by medical professionals hasn’t stopped people believing lots of things about Covid.

Not content with ruining most of social media and prime time viewing on TV thanks to Clive Palmer’s ads, they are now ruining sport.

COMMENTS

Trust the Anti Vaxxers to try and join their shit on a real Australian hero like Shane Warne.

Dave, Edinburgh Castle Hotel, Brisbane.

How can you rule it out? Look at the “coincidences”. I was reading something on Facebook saying that there’s no doubt it was the booster.

IS THE AUSTRALIA v PAKISTAN TEST MATCH THE DULLEST SPORTING EVENT IN AGES?

weekly wrap march 8 - aus v pak test match

After a bumper Ashes season, the historic return to Pakistan was looked upon some as some great afternoon TV sport fodder. Instead it has been one of the more boring events for 2022 and 2021.

And it’s not just because we’re not winning.

It has even left some people to turn off the cricket all together and get back into books.

Our poll has some comparisons for the entertainment level.

F1 DUMPS RUSSIA

weekly wrap march 8 - russian gp

Formula 1 bosses and Teams took swift action against Russia after their invasion of Ukraine.

Back of the grid driver Nikita Mazepin aka Many Mazespins has been dumped by Haas. And his father’s company as a sponsor of Haas have been shown the door. Neither Mazepin will be a big loss for the neutrals, except for potential losing the worst driver in F1 for a few years.

F1 also removed the Russian GP from the Calendar. Some will miss the Sochi track, others like Lando Norris probably won’t mind after his race in 2021 where rain ruined the fun.

The only loss will be seeing Steven Seagal in the crowd.

We suggested some alternative locations, which our readers voted on. We would particularly love to see the F1 cars race on the 2.4 km track. The track record of 46 seconds was set by a Formula Holden back in 1994, so how good would the F1 cars be?

COMMENTS

Maxi-spins would probably be lapped 80 times during a race at Lakeside.

Alf, Dakabin

Well, if he lasted that long.

I’d reckon the golfers on the fifth at Pine Rivers next door would have had to keep their ears open just in case he came over the barriers.

ARE MAN UTD THE DARYL SOMERS OF FOOTBALL?

weekly wrap march 8 - man utd

This is essentially asking the question whether Man Utd are simply trading under their past successes

The use of Daryl Somers is after his annual reappearance with a certain Dancing Show on Australian TV, where he still tries to match the heights of his fame with jokes from the same era.

Much like Man Utd trying to match their old heroics.
