EVERYDAY NEWS – Fitness Challenge has Ulterior Motive

A fitness enthusiast has quit a local Facebook charity challenge after becoming inundated with annoying marketing materials.

Trevor (a P.E. teacher at the his local high school) started doing charity fitness challenge to keep himself busy during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown and enjoyed it so much he kept doing them when life slowly returned to (some) normality in 2021.

He was scrolling Facebook one night in early February when he saw an ad for The March in March, where participants can walk/run/cycle a nominated distance during March while raising funds for charity.

He signed up enthusiastically, nominating 100km for the month and setting a nominal $10 as his mandatory fundraising amount, even though he had no intention of bugging friends to donate, that enthusiasm dwindled as the marketing emails started pouring in.

“It started with a few welcoming emails, which was fine. Then they got more and more frequent, with most of them asking me how my fundraising was going,” said Trevor. “It got to the point where I was deleting them as soon as I got them. I’m just in it for the exercise; I don’t care about fundraising.”

The final straw came when he got a text message from The March in March charity one afternoon, again asking about his fundraising goal.

“I know I had to give my phone number to sign up, but none of the other charity things I’ve done have texted me. I can live with the constant emails, but a text is way too far. It’s a massive invasion of privacy!”

Frustrated, Trevor deleted his account from the The March in March website and vowed never to do another charity challenge again.

Despite this, Trevor will still run his nominated 100km this March, but will do it for the fun of it, “rather than pretending to care about some b***s*** charity challenge.”
