A local man has lost interest in a quirky Netflix Dramedy Small-Town News after an uncharacteristically emotional episode.
While originally chosen by his wife, Ben Gallagher found himself getting invested in the story about a burnt out New York journalist who moves back to her home town to manage the local newspaper and their related social media accounts. Along the way, she deals with the light-hearted dramas of the quirky residents and falls back in love with her high school sweetheart.
“I didn’t mind it; the humour was gentle and the problems were relatable, usually involving farcical comedic misunderstandings, kinda like Gilmore Girls. It’s the perfect escapist show,” said Gallagher.
Then, the season one finale featured the death of the town’s oldest resident – affectionately known as ‘Grandmama’ by everyone – which temporarily destroyed Gallagher’s interest in the show.
“I HATE when shows do that! They’re plodding along nicely, then come the season finale – bang! Here comes the emotional manipulation for cheap ratings! The missus started to tear up a bit, so I got her some tissues, poured her a fresh glass of wine, and excused myself to the bedroom to watch YouTube highlights of Warney’s top 20 Test wickets. Warney’s private life may have been a mess, and his commentary is egotistical and full of Victorian bias, but he was a brilliant bowler!”
Gallagher’s dislike of sad shows came when he was blindsided by Marley and Me.
“I went to see it with some mates, thinking it’d be a cute movie about a naughty-but-loveable doggy, and a chance to perve on Jennifer Aniston, but the dog’s death killed us. We all cried like little babies on the way home. We’ve never spoken about it since.”
However, Gallagher returned to the living room an hour later to continue watching Small-Town News after his wife assured him the sad parts were over.
“I’ll give it another chance, but if it starts getting sad again, I’m putting Warney back on,” said Gallagher.
Everyday News is a brand new general news/parody section of The Gurgler, and definitely not a lame rip-off of ‘The Betoota Advocate’. We swear.
