Premier League GW1 Results – Barely Interesting Stats
Going Back to 2010 just three promoted sides have won their first game of the new Premier League season.
- 2017 Huddersfield beat Crystal Palace 3-0 away
- 2016 Hull beat Leicester 2-1 at home.
- 2012 West Ham beat Aston Villa 1-0.
No other season since 2010 has two promoted sides won on the first weekend like this season.
This season saw Liverpool open their season against a promoted side for the third straight season. They have won all three games.
Liverpool have also scored three or four goals in each opening weekend fixture for six straight seasons. 22 goals in those six seasons.
Manchester clubs have now won 12 matches in a row on opening weekend. Note: they did not play on opening weekend last season.
Southampton’s goal this weekend was their first opening weekend goal since 2016 when they drew 1-1 with Watford.
Same but worse for West Ham who hadn’t scored a goal since 2016 and lost their opening weekend games by a combined 15-0 in four games heading into this season.
Sunderland were the last team to score an opening week goal v Manchester City before Spurs.
Manchester City have yet to win at Spurs’ new home. Or score a goal.
Despite an ordinary result to kick off their season, Arsenal topped the Chances Created and Shots stat for GW1. West Ham equalled Manchester United for Shots on Target.

For this weekend’s results we feature Arsenal v Brentford, where Arsenal’s stats hold up, but so does Brentford’s clean sheet. West Ham v Newcastle was a lot of fun to watch, so threw those stats in. And some for the biggest game of the weekend in the traditional Sunday timeslot.
BRENTFORD v ARSENAL
