FPL Captain Picks GW1 Analysis

So you’ve seen our Captain’s Table, and now it is time for a piece of our mind.

Bruno Fernandes tops our first Captain’s Table for the season and to little surprise. But there is a small doubt in one’s mind. He didn’t finish the season as well as earlier in the season, and didn’t do much at the Euros either. He looked exhausted and probably was given the marathon of football over the last season and a half. And does new signing Jadon Sancho hinder or help the Man Utd attacker? Of course we haven’t included Jadon Sancho in the above table due to a lack of stats from last season in the Premier League, but you can dive further into his stats with our analysis on Jadon Sancho in depth.

Raphinha as exciting as he is, who’d think he’d be right up the top of the Captain’s Table. Especially given in our FPL Cheapies Analysis we were questioning whether Harrison was the better choice for the FPL team. Raphinha is helped with a great record v Manchester United in his short Premier League career, but his other stats do stack up.

Liverpool’s Mo Salah and Sadio Mane open their season up against Norwich, and many FPL managers will be rubbing their hands together at the potential points fest in GW1. But while this exact fixture ended 4-1 to Liverpool in the opening match of the 19-20 season, Norwich are a slightly different team this time around bringing a much better defensive record from the Championship this time around. As we pointed out in our FPL Promoted Team Analysis.

Manchester City players on paper are always great FPL Captain picks, however there is always a rotation risk, and the pending arrival of Jack Grealish won’t make those decisions any easier. You can barely guarantee anyone other than Kevin De Bruyne a start so any Man City player as captain is a risk. Further consideration should be given to Man City’s record at Spurs recently. Their record is quite bad with the recent results being Spurs 2-0 (20-21) Spurs 2-0 (19-20) Spurs 1-0 (18-19) Man City 1-0 (18-19) Man City 3-1 (17-18) Spurs 2-0 (16-17) and Spurs 4-1 (15-16)

Chelsea players look interesting too with an easy-ish game on paper first up. Kai Havertz makes our Captain’s Table top ten, but like Man City there’s a worry of rotation. Perhaps maybe not Mason Mount, but then again…

For your consideration are the below key stats from last season’s FPL for the top ten players from our Captain’s Table.

FPL Captain Picks GW1 Final Say

FPL 2021-22 Fantasy Premier League Captain hello goodbye

HELLO – Meet the new season, same as the old season. Bruno Fernandes and Mo Salah appear to be the go to FPL Captain picks. Mo Salah for us as Norwich should be easier opposition than Leeds for Man Utd and there’s a small doubt over how new signing Jadon Sancho fits in and affects Fernandes. Although points are only a penalty away….

CALL ME MAYBE – While Raphinha, Kai Havertz, Sadio Mane are not the top billed stars their stats stack up for GW1. Havertz and Mane are playing opposition who are expected to be in the lower half of the table and both have great scoring records against this weekend’s opponent. Could be that differential to get the season off to a flyer.

GOODBYEHarry Kane – well he may at least settle who he’s going to play for by playing for no one in GW1.

FPL Captain Pick GW1 - Stats - Shots

CAPTAIN’S TABLE DATA

Goals and Assists v Opposition are compiled and compared to the best return per game for each player against this week’s opposition. The top return is awarded 30 points and points are reduced on a sliding scale from there.

FPL points per Minute  is a measurement taking the overall FPL points scored by the minutes on the field. This is so injured players or mid season signings are disadvantaged. The top return is awarded 30 points and points are reduced on a sliding scale from there.

Key Stats per Game is our own in house combination of key FPL stats for each players, which is then compared to the top results and goes down on a sliding scale. The fields include Goals per Game, Shots per Game Assists per Game, Key Passesper Game, Shots On Target per Game, and Chances per Game.

FPL points per Million / Cost a temporary measure from last season until this season’s Current Form becomes available.

Match Rater – in addition to our Captain’s Table we have also devised our own Premier League Fixture Difficulty which we have included for a max 10 points. Because we think that game itself should be rated as well.

Multiplier – as per our Goal Scoring Trends Analysis, some players thrive against certain types of opposition and not. So we have added multipliers to the overall score based on each player’s record last season against top or bottom six, big clubs, small clubs, and home or away. Not the show, but locations of where the players score more.

Total all the scores are combined for an overall total.
