Two fierce NRL rivals will become one in 2022.
Sick of the Broncos’ mediocrity, the ‘home of footy’ Channel Nein have demanded a merger between the Broncos and the Melbourne Storm.
From 2022, the Broncos and Storm will become the Brisbane Storm, with Melbourne’s supercoach Craig Bellamy as head coach, current Broncos head coach Kevin Walters as assistant coach, and Allan Langer as head trainer.
The Brisbane Storm will play 11 home games at Lang Park, which will all be played on Thursday or Friday nights and broadcast on Nein.
The Brisbane Storm’s colours will be maroon, gold, white, purple, and blue.
Walters is relieved by the news. “I’m sick of coaching these pack of bludgers by myself. I’ve fair dinkum aged 100 years since March! I’m looking forward to working with Bellyache and actually winning a few games!”
Bellamy is looking forward to the challenge, and will be picking out the best of the Broncos’ current squad for 2022. “Mate, I love moulding a bunch of kids into champions. Some of these Broncos have a bit of toe about them; they deserve to be in a winning footy team.”
Nein CEO Hugh Marks said relocating the Victorian team was a surefire way for guaranteed results. “We could have rushed in the Bombers and waited a couple of years for them to be finals contenders, or we could relocate one of the most consistent teams in the NRL to the heartland of rugby league and expect immediate results. Melbourne have been the unofficial fourth Queensland team for ages, so it’s a no-brainer.”
However, Victoria will be fairly compensated, with all 16 NRL clubs (including the Brisbane Storm) to play one home game at AAMI Park each season.
