NRL Round 6 Tips Alternative – Gurgler v Best Mascot + Barely Interesting Stats

Hard to think we are already 20% of the way through the regular season, and you can probably rule out at least 20% of these from finals contention or team that it would be a real stretch for them to make finals. Talking of stretches, we have begun to run out of ideas for alternative tips already, so have gone fairly subjective this week with our Alternative NRL Round 6 Tips.

With your tipping, instead of allowing the competition admin to give you the away teams for when you don’t care about who you tip, why not take on board our weekly Alternative NRL Tipping method instead.

Each week there’s a new theme, and occasionally it will have nothing to do with rugby league. Just the way we like it. This week is all about each team’s mascot, and who we think is better in a range of categories.

Sure, it is shamefully self-promoting as it is based on something we did during lockdown last year, but it’s as good a method as any of our other alternative tips.

In addition to that is a whole bunch of barely interesting stats for the round of NRL ahead. Impress your neighbours and fellow passengers by stealing them and sharing.

Good luck with your Alternative NRL Round 6 Tips if you choose to use them.

NRL Round 6 Tips Alternative – Gurgler v Best Mascots

So here are this week’s alternative tips. The method to how it works is below.

METHOD TO THE MADNESS

Last year during the period where there was no sport of rugby league we came up with a method of determining the best NRL mascot. Read it here.

We based it on a number of worthy categories. There’s the overall look of the mascot, X-Factor, whether they appear to be child-friendly, have a cool name, and for balance (and a female-friendly stance) we borrowed the view of Ladies Who League. We gave every NRL mascot a score out of ten for all categories, and the biggest total after all the categories wins.

The better the mascot, the better team’s chances of winning this weekend. We say anyway. For this week.

NRL Round 6 Tips – Barely Interesting Stats

  • Broncos have not beaten a Sydney team other than the Bulldogs since they beat South Sydney before Covid 19 lockdowns. They haven’t conceded less than 24 in those 12 games.
  • Penrith have won their last four on a Thursday night, Broncos have lost five in a row and ten of their last 11,
  • Penrith have lost three games from the start of 2020; the Broncos have won four.
  • Newcastle played the Sharks twice in this timeslot last season and won both.
  • Manly have won just two of their last ten home games against Qld opposition. Only four of those ten games have been at Brookvale. Neither of the two wins in ten came at Brookvale. This week is at Mudgee.
  • Gold Coast have the worst winning % for the 15 teams who have played at non regular NRL grounds since 1998 (excluding Central Coast which is a bit of a regular). Yes 15 teams, the Broncos are yet to play at one of these unique locations.
  • Souths have won nine of the last 11 home matches v Wests Tigers and 12 of their last 14 at home to Sydney sides on a Saturday.
  • Wests Tigers have been booed by their own fans in their last one home games.
  • The Tigers have also lost their last seven matches where they are the away side at ANZ Stadium.
  • Parramatta have lost one, won one for their last eight Saturday games. Their most recent result on a Saturday was a win. The Eels have won 11 of their past 12 games against sides from outside Sydney.
  • Dragons have lost four straight to the Warriors and only one of those games has been in NZ. Before then it was just five losses in 26 games going back to 1998.
  • Warriors have won just three of their last 18 Sunday matches.
  • Warriors have scored 12 points and lost both of their last two games. The NZ Warriors have also scored exactly 12 points 52 times in the NRL since 1998 and have won just 5 times. That’s probably obvious given 12 points isn’t a very high number, but it is still mildly interesting.
  • The Cowboys and Bulldogs have a combined winning % of 18% since the start of the 2020 season.
  • Cowboys have won two in a row to Sydney teams on a Sunday.

WINNING % v MELBOURNE

With Melbourne looking like a front runner for yet another season, and having not only just played their historical bunnies (Broncos and, er, the Bunnies) they have also already played the team who have the best record against them in the NRL (Bulldogs).

So given that just about every other team in between is ahead for the Storm, why not look at the historical winning % of Melbourne vs all clubs.

TEAM RECORDS AT NON REGULAR NRL GROUNDS

Manly and the Titans meet in Mudgee this weekend, another game taken to the country or a venue which doesn’t regularly host NRL games.

So what better time to look at all of the games since 1998 and see which teams have the better record, or indeed have played a game at one of these locations at all.

For this purpose we have excluded the Central Coast, which is sort of a regular fixture between a few sides each season.
