Brisbane have chosen to forfeit their round six game against Penrith.
Broncos coach Kevin Walters made the decision after the Panthers’ win against Canberra last week.
“The Panthers absorbed a strong Raiders start, then ripped them apart in 11 minutes before halftime,” said Walters. “We’ve just been smashed by the Storm and Souths, so I know this game won’t end well. Better to spare the boys the humiliation and the mental scars.”
Penrith will take an automatic two points and their sixth straight win, which Panthers coach Ivan Cleary is happy with.
“It saves us travelling to Brisbane and I was considering resting a few guys anyway after the big Raiders game,” said Cleary. “Now we’ll stay home, have a light training run on Saturday morning, watch the NSW Cup boys go around, then chill for the rest of the weekend.”
But footy fans shouldn’t be worried, as the NRL has organised a Brisbane Legends vs Penrith Legends game this Thursday night at Lang Park, broadcast on Channel Nein and Fox League, with both teams wearing 90s retro jerseys.
I’m gonna pull on the boots and have a crack, so is Alfie!” said Walters. “We’ll show the boys how to play footy and not lose by 50 each week.”
