Self-proclaimed rugby league ‘legend’ Anthony Mundine will make a shock return for the St George Illawarra Dragons in 2021.
After another embarrassing boxing loss, Mundine has decided to return for his first love, in time for the Dragons’ round two game in Townsville against the Cowboys.
Never short of confidence, Mundine is expecting a big return to the game, “I’ll not only lead the mighty Dragons to the premiership, but I’ll win the Clive Churchill, Dally M, play all three Origins for NSW, and play in the world cup. I’ll do it all!”
While Mundine hasn’t played in the NRL since 2000, Dragons coach Anthony Griffin is expecting a smooth transition, “Mundine’s a naturally gifted athlete; I’m so confident he’ll fit in that I’ve made him captain in place of Ben Hunt.”
Hunt – one of the most maligned players in the NRL – is happy about Mundine’s return. “I’m sick of people ripping on me because I dropped a grand final a million years ago. Mundine will absorb all the headlines and hype through his personality alone, and I can finally go back to playing footy. I just want to be left alone!”
Channel Nein and Fox Sports have already launched aggressive marketing campaigns around Mundine’s return, with Fox launching a ‘Mundine Cam’ (similar to the Jarryd Hayne one a few years ago), and Nein to introduce the ‘Voice of Mundine’, with Mundine to be miked up during Nein’s Dragons’ games, similar to T20 cricketers in the BBL.
“Mundine is marketer’s gift who’s not afraid to tell the truth,’ said Nein CEO Hugh Marks. “We’d be stupid not to explo- I mean, use that for our broadcasts.”
Meanwhile, various sports betting companies are busy taking bets on when Mundine will say something stupid. The smart money is halfway through the Cowboys game.
