What a weekend of Premier League football Gameweek 1 was, probably the best weekend of football for the season so far. And with both Manchester clubs and Aston Villa and Burnley joining the party, our 2020-21 Premier League Week 2 Predictions and preview should be the best yet.

This preview ambles through all ten Premier League fixtures, with a bunch of visuals, stats and figures for some barely interesting reading. And if that isn’t enough, we throw in our 2020-21 Premier League Week 2 Predictions for each game.

All the stats in the visuals below are from the 19/20 or before, since not all the teams have played yet.

Premier League Week 1 – Best Stats from last weekend….

• Leeds United wowed everyone last weekend with their 4-3 loss to Liverpool, but their xG was just 0.27. Only Fulham’s was worse at just 0.13.
• Leeds’ xA (xG against) was worst at 3.15. 
• Chelsea’s win v Brighton went against xG. Chelsea’s xG was 1.27 and Brighton’s 1.44. The only winners from week 1 with a deficit.
• Liverpool teams were first and second for chances created – Liverpool 14 – Everton 13.
• West Ham was third for Key Passes last weekend, despite being woeful at home to Newcastle. Newcastle had the second worst Shots on Target % despite winning.
• Spurs had the third most touches inside the final third v Everton who had the third worst.

Why Everton can win

Everton looked quite impressive in the first gameweek, and West Brom is a slightly easier opposition than Spurs. Just.

It took a promoted side until the sixth gameweek last season to win a game away. And that was the surprise packets of Sheffield United.

Everton have won their last three first home games of the season. And they haven’t lost their first home game of the season since 2011 against QPR – 4 Draws and 4 wins.

Only Liverpool created more chances last weekend than Everton (13)

Why West Brom can win.

West Brom won more points and scored more goals per game away last season than Everton did at home.

Everton have only beaten West Brom once at home in their last five matches. (3 Draws – 1 WBA Win – 1 Everton Win)

Barely Interesting Stat:

West Brom haven’t beaten Everton at Goodison Park in September since 1965.

LEEDS v FULHAM

Why Leeds can win

Any team that can get that close to beating Liverpool away, should well cover a promoted side match at home.

Leeds scored a healthy 2.3 points per game v top six sides last season.

Leeds won this fixture comfortably last season 3-0.

Leeds won the most amount of tackles on the weekend. Fulham the third least.

Why Fulham can win.

Leeds have only beaten Fulham once at home in the past eight meetings – the last fixture. 

Mitrovic is a better striker than Bamford.

Fulham have won the last two matches in September between these sides.

Fulham completed 88.1% of their passes last weekend, which was second best.

Barely Interesting Stat:

The combined xG for these two teams last weekend was 0.4.

Four games in row between 2015 and 2017 finished 1-1.

MANCHESTER UNITED v CRYSTAL PALACE

Why Man Utd can win

Because of Man Utd’s superior overall record v Crystal Palace.

Man Utd scored four times more goals post restart last season than Crystal Palace.

Prior to last season’s loss to Crystal Palace, the two most recent wins before that were 2011 and 1991.

Crystal Palace have lost all six matches between these sides in September.

Why Crystal Palace can win.

Crystal Palace were better on the road against top sides last season.

Crystal Palace also beat Man Utd at Old Trafford last season. They drew the season before in Manchester.

Barely Interesting Stat:

Prior to their win over Man Utd last season, Crystal Palace hadn’t scored a goal in the six preceding games.

ARSENAL v WEST HAM

Why Arsenal can win

Arsenal looked very good last weekend against a much weaker London last week, and have the same scenario this week, except they are at home.

West Ham averaged just 0.33 points away to the mid 8 teams last season. Although, Arsenal look slightly better than mid 8 at the moment.

West Ham have scored just two goals in the past 11 matches at Arsenal.

Why West Ham can win.

West Ham created more chances last weekend than Arsenal, with more key passes. Perhaps it was just a bad one-off and they are going to come out all guns ablaze this weekend. Pardon the pun.

Barely Interesting Stat:

Arsenal’s current winning streak at home to West Ham is five matches, which is the equal longest run consecutively. However looking back through the history, the two previous times Arsenal got to five home wins in a row, West Ham pinched the sixth match.
